My maid recently went to dentist as she had a swollen face from the bad tooth decay. And found that she had 8 teeth which are badly decayed.

To fix all the teeth + cleaning will cost about $1000. My maid have done the extraction of the one coused swollen face and costed $150 (Antibiotic treat ment + extraction)
Nurse told me I have to fix all the teeth for her otherwise she will lose all her teeth later. Also need cleaning as I let her look after my baby and if her sliva gets into my baby’s mouth my baby will get germs and end up having teeth problems!!
If it was you what would you do??
And also want to hear other people’s stories too.

Is your maid a filipino or indonesian?

I ask bcos my filipino maid told me it is cheaper to fix her teeth back home (in Philippines). I believe it is the same for Indon maid. I’m not sure if i’m right or wrong as i think everyone has to take responsibility of her own personal hygiene. Therefore, what i did was to split 50% of the cost with her (she did it in Philippines). I think a lot of people here will be "scolding" me for doing this as the maid dont earn much. What i did was to give her the other half as bonus for completion of her contract. I want her to be responsible!!

Mine is Burmese. She never been to see dentist before...

I saw her teeth had full of pulque!
How much did you pay after all?
Is it ok to let her pay half? But we still have to cover $500 😞
Do all maids have this bad dental hygiene?

my 1st maid was Indonesian, i paid to fix her teeth decayed cause gum swell badly. Paid $200 for extraction of two teeth plus A&E cost (caused she fainted after taking strong painkillers for her extraction. I had to call ambulance cos i was with my two young kids when she fainted..

And later i was suspected of ill-treating my maid, but all ended well after she explained to the paramedics 😓

anw., dental can be a costly issue. 😓

If you think she is able to contribute more to your family, then pay for her expenses and she ll likely to work even harder. However, if she is below average, and might pass the virus to your dds, them I suggest you consider changing a new one but make sure you alert the maid agency to handle the problem before they are deploy the maid to other family. :xedfingers:

I think the idea that her saliva will get into your baby's mouth and give her teeth problems is a bit far-fetched.

I would suggest that you fix what needs fixing if you want to hold on to her. Ask the dentist to explain to you exactly what needs to be done to make sure that it is all necessary. Some dentists can be a bit over-cautious.

I don’t know the average… But she is below my expectation.

And I don’t think she would work harder because she thinks it is employer’s responsibility anyway. She didn’t even say thank you when I took her to dentist.
I am sure if I ask her to be transfered she will cry… And I will not be able to make up my mind. Is there any way to ask her to leave the house peacefully?
I will tell the agency but do you think they would do anything about it?

If you have made up yr mind then just ask her to pack her things on the day you want to send her off. Then you won’t have time for all the drama.

Anyway, dental expenses can potentially cost a lot. My maid had to do filling to one of her tooth and already cost us $120 and she was only with us for less than 2 months but my dh said never mind just pay for her.

Last time, I paid everything for my filipino maid. And after 6 years with us, she repaid us by stealing from my bedridden mum. In the end, I send her home, but I still gave her $2000 farewell gift. I would have given her more (it was our intention all along to give all our going home maids some money) if not for the stealing.

Nowadays , I have learnt not to be overly nice. Dont expect them to feel appreciative. May be appreciative in the beginning, but after a while, they think it is their entitlement.

Anyway, recently , my current maid broke her denture, cost $380, I did not pay for her.
