Hi! I'm a newbie here, after going through some of the topic randomly now than i realised that PSLE - Sec 1 process is so complicated.

I'm aiming Cedar Girls for my DD but Cedar only taking in DSA? Anyone got any idea what is the minimum aggregate to get into Cedar?

Her teacher hope that she can get in to RGS which i don't think she can make it after seeing her mid-year result, she failed her maths just by a 4 marks.. :scared:

I don't even dare to think of aggregate score she be getting. My maths also cannot make it so i don't really know how to calculate the score base on her mid-year result.. 🤷
Cedar takes in students via DSA as well as PSLE results. Last year's COP for O levels was 249 and for IP was 258.

You can calculate her T score by multiple the total percentage by 3. This will give you a rough idea of her score. The standard of her school has to be taken into consideration too. The standard of top schools tend to be slightly higher than the neighborhood schools.

Just to share, my friend 's daughter who scored 249 in her PSLE appealed n got in to Cedar. According to her mum, her girl has been struggling with her study. With tutition in English, literature , math n Chinese , her result still not satisfactory, struggle to pass.

The average score is 256 among the students. So need to score the range of 256 n above to be 'average in the school.

            Hi Magiccastle,
Any idea hows teachers at Cedar at Sec 1?
Do they preteach Upper Sec Science syllabus to Sec 1 ?
            H/wk wise manageable?
Yr frd's daughter scored a gd aggregate 249, yet struggling now, can seek teachers' help like remedial after sch, right?
            Stress....

              Hi all,

Would like to have your opinion on this: is it better to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond? This is not off topic but it is got to do with the choice of sec school that my dd would choose. She is in a primary school that has a reasonably good affiliated sec school which is also offering IP. Say she qualifies for RGS and NYGH with a t score of 264, should she stay put or move. If she stays, she will be in top class. If she moves to RGS or NYGH, she is just another digit there.

              TIA.
I saw this post and remembered something which the RGS Principal said at her 1st address to Sec 1 parents. She said that remember that the size of the fish irrespective of whether in a pond or the ocean is the same size. But the fish caught from the ocean is tastier 😄 But then again the affiliated IP school the parent is referring to is not exactly a pond.

My dd in RGS is having a great experience. She is being given opportunities to lead and try out new things(even though she is not a prefect now and was a senior prefect in her old school).

Cedar Girls’ is a good school. Aggregate range of 2010 PSLE pupils posted to Cedar Girl’s is 248 - 269. 2011 COP is 250. The school standard is high & it’s students are among the top 10% in PSLE. The child has to be prepared to study very hard in such competitive environment. Especially those who just meet the COP or appealed to get in. Parents need to take this into consideration when it is time to select sec schools for their own kids.

Yes, agreed that those who just met COP must work hard.
Just to share: my niece graduated fr St Nicholas Girls' last yr.
Coming back to my niece, she got into SNG with affiliation points(220+) n was always in the last 2 class in her Sec sch days.
Those yrs in SNG was really tough for her. She had to keep up with her peers( those fr own SNG Pri with scores 230+ n non Feeder girls with 249 onwards).
She would always fail some subjects during CA n just passed her End Of Yr Exams each yr. Demoralising I heard.
Luckily, St Nicks has wonderful, caring teachers who never give up on their girls. Those 4 yrs my niece stayed back in sch to ask teachers for help, remedial classes n night studies in sch...
The teachers constantly motivated her, even told her not to give up on her A Maths( A Maths is mandatory in SNG).
With all the coaching, my niece mgt to obtain a decent score of 12 points before 2 bonus points for her 'O' Level!
Bottom line is other than a Gd sch with dedicated teachers like St Nicks, parents must not give up on their kids as well.
So those fr struggling in Cedar Girls', never give up. Consult yr teachers if in doubt.
                    Tks for reading.

My friend told me when her girl was in sec 1 , the sch taught math topics that are from sec 2 topics. For science , some topics cannot be found in assessment books.Even for Chinese , her girl’s pet subject, (she scored distinction for HC in PSLE) , her mark range ard C5 n B4 . Her score in tests fluctuate , up n down.
Teachers wise, in general should be ok. No complaint from her. But i think the expectation on the students are high . Her teacher ever commented that not getting distinction for English at O level is not a norm . She said 90% of the students will get distinction for English.

I am getting very worried. Is this healthy? Is this right? From P6 to Sec 1 is already a big jump, how can the school skip teaching Sec 1 stuffs & just jump to Sec 2? Who is responsible to fill in the gap? Parents? Tuition centres? It's one thing getting students to be independent learner but not teaching is definitely not acceptable! :frustrated:
