Our Singapore women are highly intelligent and educated. Why should they go to china? To learn tactics from china women? A china-born friend herself told me that most of those 'study mamas' are not naive and simple women. They come here with their kids but usually engage in hanky panky business.

Quite true. However, there are some exceptions. One of my students wrote an essay praising her mum. She was about 15 years old when she came to study in a sec school. After a few months observing those study mamas around her, she was very thankful that her own mother refused to engage in similar activities and took on 2 jobs to support her. She worked so hard that she managed to get into express stream when promoted to sec 2 and scored 17 points for her O levels. I've another student whose parents are here with her. They have decent jobs.

this study-mama thingy is something unique in Singapore. I read before that most countries do not issue special immigration passes to mothers or fathers who accompany their children to study. Probably a short term one for the mothers to help their kids to settle down and they will have to leave. But here... sigh :roll:

Not really. These 'study mamas' accompany their kids. They do not leave. Their dependent pass period to stay here follows the child's student visa. For decent study mamas, they work as domestic cleaners.

If study mamas don’t work, how are they going to support kids’ education? Most of these women are separated from husbands or divorced. The kids are not here on scholarship. Many of these women work as part time maids, if decent. Or else, they work in massage parlours. Heard of several who sleep with employers to get extra money.

they shouldn't send their kids overseas if they cannot afford it. Some time back when a group of study mamas wrote in to complain about the high costs of living here and they request the govt to allow them to work and guess what was the reply given? It is their duty to check the costs needed to stay here and to provide enough to last throughout their education. The reason why the study mamas are not allowed to work is to enable the child to have proper emotional support and care and the best person to give is the parents themselves.
Just as for anyone of us here who intend to send our kids for overseas study, surely we will do our sums and find out the total costs and consider the affordability etc before we take the plunge right? Don't think we will send them there hoping to find a school that is cheap and good and we can find a job to support ourselves.

When we send our kids overseas, we are supposed to have financial means. The whole idea of sending kids overseas is to make them learn to be independent. Then why is govt allowing study mamas to come here to stay?

Actually, this "study mama" scheme, instead of attracting talented kids to study here , and in future , may be stay on to contribute to spore ,

we ended up attracting women whose purpose were to come here to look for opportunities, and having a school-going kids help them to come into spore easily.
