Guess it also depends on how common/unique the surname is and where the forefathers came from. China? Taiwan? Which province? Same dialect group?

There are many married couples with same surnames especially if they are common ones like Tan and Lim. With numerous generations before us, there’s no guarantee there’s no distant relations between chinese spouses even if the surnames are different.

Drama always have 表哥 & 表妹 fall in love, so far no violent objection between both families. So I guess it's alright.

For example, what if both the people have the same dialect group, same surname and ancestors in the same province.

Actually for Taiwan people they can trace their ancestral roots back to China so they are technically "Chinese".

Seriously, inbreeding weakens d gene pool.
Strongly discourage to marry within immediate family.
However, it's OK if blood relations r a few times removed.
Also, having same surname does not necessarily mean they r related.

if same surname, same dialect group, came from same province / county in China … better be careful and check the genealogy 族谱first…in case of in-breeding risk… that is why parents disapprove of cousins falling in love because in terms of genes, they are so closely related that any mutation may result in kids with disabilities…


i know of some surnames that have been traced to the around the first century, complete list of genealogy, a few million descendants …
