All About Delayed Speech

My son also uses single syllable when he is 2 yrs plus. Childcare teachers commented that he has strong vocabularly & they are surprised by the amount of words he know. I think he just do not know how to use them to form sentence & communicate.

Hi Sheryl,
Your son must be able to make sentences now since he is only 4 months behind. That's really great! Agree with you that parental involvement is very important.
Can you share with me how you encourage your son to move from single to multi syllables? Thanks.

Musings:
My son is diagnosed with Specific Language Impairment (SLI), and he is in P1 now. The school mentioned that we can apply for MT exemption but we keep this option open as he still shows interest in learning the language.Hi does anyone have experience getting exemption from mother tongue for child with delayed speech? My DS in nursery has delayed speech and seeing speech therapist at KKH every month.
Is the exemption apply throughout primary school or depends on actual progress?
Any info on exemption from Mother tongue will be appreciated. -

Hi XueYen,Hi jedamum
May i know what books do you recommend. My appointment with the speech therapist is on late Dec.
Thanks!
I came across this book in the Library and this is recommended by my son's speech therapy too.
Book Title: The Parent's Guide to Speech and Language Problems.
Author: Debbie Feit
I just started reading this. As I'm a slow reader, hence, I purchase a copy of the ebook from ebooks.com -> http://www.ebooks.com/321952/the-parent-146-s-guide-to-speech-and-language-problems/feit-debbie/. Not sure if you can get this in local bookshops.

SAHM Chew:
Hi SAHM Chew,Ds3 was doing speech therapy at nuh. Refer to epic as the doc felt that epic can help him more. My case is under nuh, can i still go to kk? Kk waiting period is at least 6 months, therefore do not felt like wasting any more time

It's odd to send him to epic if he's not autistic. Maybe u should go kkh instead. I was referred to the dr in the general clinic first, then I requested to see the speech therapist becoz of poor articulation. So I didn't go to child dev at all. Went straight to speech therapy. For u to see any significant progress, u need to practise everyday with him. ST can only see u so infreqly, the main 'therapist' is actually u. I was never referred to go EPIC Prog until he saw the child dev end of last yr. By then it's too late to attend EPIC.
I give up the queuing for DS as I need the frequent and immediate work with him, hence, I send him to a private Speech Therapy - http://www.leomagan.com/.
I found them through internet and DS has been with them for few months and he enjoys the lesson and see slight improvement. The cost is affordable, therapy session is around $88 per hr and normal practice session is around $40 per hr.
Talk to them and get them to assess and make the recommendation.

kids suspected of slower development in speech should also go for hearing check
if they don't hear well, they won't learn the speech, and in some cases, it is simply too much ear wax.  but true -

Thanks... We also heard about that, so we put our son though a hearing test to ensure that his ears were alright...kids suspected of slower development in speech should also go for hearing check

Thanks laughing flower,
I miss this post. I have engaged a pte speech therapist to come to my place every week for 1 hr at $150 / hr since feb 2012. At the same time, he is attending Eipic 3 times per week. And going to a mainstream kindergarten everyday. His expenses alone for these 3 cost me 1k+ per mth. But what to do? I did not see much improvement in Eipic as i felt that there were less concentration as there are 6-8 kids in a class. But for the pte speech therapist, i can see the improvement, as the speech therapist is able to correct him immediately. -
I need help!
My DS3 was diagnosed with delayed speech and he is attending speech therapy lessons every week.
I wanted to start teaching him how to read, therefore, i am using Peter and Jane 1a.
But i realised that he has problem recognising words. He could not recognise the word "Peter" even after 2 days (4 sessions with him).
How should i help him? Is this a problem in the 1st place?
Thanks -
My boy is 4 yrs old.
slmkhoo:
The P&J series is teaching reading by recognising whole words. This is one of the methods of learning to read, but it doesn't suit every child as the starting point. Some kids need to be taught phonics (the sounds of inidividual letters and letter combinations) then how to blend them to form words. Every reader should use both methods eventually, recognising whole words for speed and sounding out words for new words. How old is your child? Most kids can learn individual sounds as early as 3yo, but don't usually master blending until 4-5yo.SAHM Chew:
