anyone has child with speech delay before, but now has gone onto Secondary Mainstream school / poly ?
can share last time how you helped your child cope with :-
- PSLE Oral exam,
- Upper primary English Comprehension & Compo ?
- Maths subject ?

For oral, other than lots of practices, we listen to audio books all the time- at home, in car, during long bus trips in Malaysia. I think that's why his reading pace and tone variation are good.
For compo, my son is not very creative; so I bought almost all (I think) the compo books in Popular to expose him to different storylines. Pitfall is he may try unsuccessfully to fit a story to the title and become off-topic. So must stress to him he needs to modify!!! He also memorises lots of useful phrases describing emotions, actions and places.
He is very strong in math.
When he was young, I taught him math the Montessori way; bought the units, tens, hundreds and thousands cubes and I had this book which taught me how to use them. I think that is very useful for understanding modelling, fractions, ratios etc. We did not do xin suan or zu suan.

agree that these cubes are useful !
our child can hold & count the number of cubes physically in his small palm. Since visual, they able to understand Maths concepts better / clearer.
may i know the Title /author /publisher of that book you used to teach yr son understand \"modelling, fractions, ratios \" ? does this instruction booklet come with the cube set that you purchase ?
i salute your dedicated hardwork effort in writing out to prepare oral passages for your child to read & remember. not easy ... very time consuming, too many topics to prepare. How to select what topics to prepare ? :salute: -

KK helped me to pass my daughter information to the society for the physically disabled , as at P1, KK is not able to support them anymore, KK told me they can only support if the kids are still in kindergarten or for more serious case from what i remember.
The lady from the society for the physically disabled rang me to arrange for speech therapy for my daughter, but it has to be a once a fornight lesson, which i am not able to keep taking leave for it.
Hence decided to put it off. I spoke to my daughter's allied educator about it too, whether should i go ahead anot? He told me it might be a good support for my daughter if i were to go ahead but did mention that my daughter 's speech is clear and he can understand her speech well.
my daughter during K2 has very short attention span too, the teacher can be teaching maths , and she can wonder off to the K1 class room and sit there to listen in the chinese class. :yikes: She can even doze off in class .
Now she is much better.
I went to the school meet the parent sessions. Her form teacher actually told me how she manages my daughter, which i can share the experience with you here, might be of some help or idea to you
What happens is that her form teacher , fully aware of her condition, actually helps me alot. I saw the classroom arrangement during the orientation, and my daughter is actually sitting just infront of the teacher. The teacher every time whenever she sees my daughter daydreaming, she will tap on her table to bring her back to reality .Her form teacher told her classmates to always keep a lookout for my daughter , like don't let her wander off during class lesson if the teacher is not around, and help to guide her along if she needs help. I asked her form teacher, are her classmates aware of her condition? she told me, No, but she told them that my daughter needs more support from all of them
Her form teacher also assigned buddies to my daughter, Eg recess buddy, dismissal buddy . I actually asked her form teacher, does her buddies feel tired having my daughter tag along with them all the times? She actually told me that they are so happy with my daughter around, they always eat together during recess and walk around the school compound together talking. I saw one of my daughter's buddy when walking her to school one day.
Her buddy actually stopped when saw my daughter from afar and waited for us to walk nearer then hold my daughter' hand and walk in with her. :boogie:
I was so glad , my daughter has friends now!!!!! :rahrah:
There are still some hiccups now and then tho, like my daughter daydreaming at times in class, which is quite often, or her afraid to do some P.E activity like foward roll. but we will get through it somehow.
i am going to start readin social story to my daughter about starting school cause next week is start of a new term again! so fast!!! -
Hi everyone, appreciate if I get advice. Had posted in the other P1 registration thread but thought I may also be able to get help here as well.
My son is born 2006 & was assessed to have developmental delays - very likely to be Asperger’s. His kindy teacher’s feel that he’s ready for P1 next yr (but of cos with more prep work & pushing). While the psychologist & I are more comfortable with him deferring to P1 in 2014 instead.
Thing is his formal/official evaluation is scheduled to take place AFTER July. We had thought of not taking it too early as his symptoms & traits keep "changing". So far we’ve been having regular 1/2yr assesents & observations instead; with the usual OT, ST, other therapies since he was 3. My preference was not to fix a label on him & instead focus on helping him manage any learning difficulties.
MOE had advised to continue taking part in 2013’s P1 registration exercise.
If we do decide to defer my son, would the school spot be held for him for 2014? Can I pay the school fees for 2013 yr to have that spot held?
Thanks v much in advance. We are really in 2 minds about deferring & are worried that he may not obtain a place in 2014, if the spot can’t be held. But at same time, he’s not ready for P1 & pushing him may backfire… -

Yes phtthp, those are the cubes I used, bought from the same place too. Just use some boxes to represent more thousands if you need.

I gave this book away some years ago so I cannot remember exactly what is in it. It definite teaches how to use the cubes the elementary way, and I think it has something on ratios and fractions. Not modelling, because that is something uniquely Singapore, but the units can be used to illustrate the concept of modelling, if you know what I mean.
I bought mine from amazon.com but it is no longer available. I checked there is one copy for loan from our National Library. Maybe you can place a reservation to borrow it and have a look?
The other part of the book teaches phonics and grammar. The phonics is the montessori method which didn't work, maybe because I don't know phonics myself hehe...
I used this book instead:

Personally, this book is amazing!!! Almost make me grateful that my son got kicked out of his phonics class!
I still remember when I first received the book, I flipped to the last page and thought: no way he can read this entire page all by himself after 100 days.
The instruction is very clear and I did each lesson faithfully every day. First few lessons are about 3 minutes each then it gets longer and longer but not exceeding 20 minutes. Nearer the end, some lessons are harder, so I repeated them. And my child really learned to read in less than 4 months!

Erm I didn't prepare the materials myself. They are available from Popular, usually it is model compo and oral together. Can also use Chinese compo and oral books to practice picture discussion. I remember his teacher made all the boys get a haircut before PSLE oral. So looking neat and cheerful helps. But most important is EYE CONTACT.

The school will not hold the place for 1 year. You will have to re-register the following year. As advised by KK doctors, if your kids can do most of the task by themselves, they should have no problem of going to mainstream school. -

U should register and let him try for a term. See how's his response. If its good, continue. If not then go back k2 lor. Nothing to lose. U can check with the principal. Think different principal has different take on whether to keep the place for your son. -

I think your preparatory prog is different from my EIPIC program. Think the prep prog is just for short term? The EIPIC is long term which comprises of ST, OT, work habits etc.
Is ur prog held at blk 606?
as I understand, the premise is sprawled over a few blocks, but the different programs are concentrated at different blocks.
