I heard Li Bai's hometown was in modern-day Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan used to belong to China Tang I think.

Hmm, I don't think Kazakhstan is belongs to China during the Tang Dynasty. Most probably is just a kingdom that pay tribute to the mighty Tang then.

Same dialect group? If not should be ok. Even if same dialect group, I personally do not think it is a big issue too. Most importantly is they love each other. Like someone have mentioned, if cousins (表兄妹）can get married, why bother about your ancestors 500 years ago could be relatives?

I knew a guy with d surname Oh
didn't know at dat time its d Korean equivalent for 吴.
Also nvr asked if he has Korean roots, but he was born n raised in SG.
