To be candid, even without Old Lee's proposition, I will predict the same outcome for SG now, we will still face the shortage in population. With a rapidly rising economy in mind and industrialization efforts, people then will naturally spend less time making babies.. So with or without Old Lee's campaign, the same outcome will happen. It was unfortunate for him to start that campaign.
As mentioned earlier, having babies is a personal decision, hardly a campaign can help much. Whatever campaign now, I see people having children still basing on individual circumstances, never driven by incentives whatsoever. Incentives help to relieve the burden, it is NOT a driver so by now I am certain people have or not have children, it is ultimately a personal reason.
We have courtesy campaigns for many years but it was never successful so I really do not give all credit to the 'stop at 2' campaign for the reduced population. It was actually \"people spent a lot of time working, building Singapore\"[/quote]
If the govt sponsors every child's education from preschool all the way to the Uni (incl tuition enrichment and what not), the storks will arrive fast and furious.

I am doubtful it will work. It only works for people who think of everything in terms of $$ but raising kids is more than just $$.

If the govt really does that (we can only dream on), it will no doubt lift a big burden off parents' backs. The stress from bringing up a child, at least in the Sg context, is school. Since most sg parents belive that good education is the key to success (I don't disagree), they'll do whatever they can to ensure the best education for their children. In their perspective, it means tuition , elite enrichment etc . That's when the stress kicks in at least for the financially not so well-to-do families.
If the govt pays for everything (fat hope), it'll be a level playing field. Every child will have access to the most \"exclusive\" and \"elite\" tuition regardless of family background. But of course, life is not as simple as that .

Anyway, why so bitter and negative near National Day? There's lots not to love about Singapore, but there's lots I love about it too.
If carnagejane feels so strongly against the nation, perhaps trying to eke a living abroad will help her count her blessings. It's easy to criticise when your belly is full. -
