Our people travel a fair bit so why do we not learn the better way by observing others' practices especially on this road manners bit? We have compulsory \"education\" but we cannot learn? Why?

Because in the school curriculum, there is no subject called 'reflection'.

I agree children learn a lot these days in content and yet they learn \"nothing\". Time is not given for reflection and deep thinking or soul searching. They are constantly racing after the bullet train.

but it does not help if we have principal who went to the extent of segregating canteen into halal section / non-halal section (of course taken off after the uproar)

So again we come to the realisation of a bigger issue in the education. We actually did better in the education in the past, perhaps something for MOE to reflect upon. Progress does not mean always looking forward, history teaches as well.

we did better last time in terms of character education

but this generation doing better in terms of depth / breadth and knowledge level

有教育,没教养 very prevalent in today's pressure cooker societies, but this is not uniquely singapore, similar trends spotted in China, India , and many other emerging countries.

On the character building.....I have always believe it should be inculcated through home/family/parents/grandparents (at least 70%). Not school. Not during my time, not now. Many a times we behave like the adults in the video, subconsciously our kids 'learn' from us.

Eg. I was told never to fight. Now, think some tell their kids - dun start but fight back dun stupid stupid get bullied. It's no longer about tolerance, it's about dun push your luck when I give u face :scared:

ksi, all yr comments are extremely valid and insightful. :salute: It's possibly true about the not reflecting and lack of soul searching..... but I think its not totally their fault - that part is supposed to be instilled by parents. and some parents are the ones who are constantly in the rat race to keep up with the Jones-es, thereby missing out this aspect of their duty to impart the moral discipline which is deemed lacking in some youngsters today, imho nia nia.

This is a gentle reminder to all of us that we should do what we preach. While we teach our children about life, they are also watching what we are doing with ours too !
