      Hi,

Is it a MUST to have a CCA? DS wants to drop all CCA next year. He also does not want to go via DSA route because you need to be committed to "that CCA". He wants to keep his options open. Any advice?

I would say it depends on the school and your DS's interest. Co-curricular activities (CCA) form an integral part of the school's objective to provide an all-round education for the pupils.

Issit because he has too many CCA that he feels tired / stressful and that give him the idea of dropping ALL?

          jedamum,

Where are you targetting??? Top schools??

I am targetting my P4 ds for Maris Stella via band. But I've a P5 to settle first. The results thingy is really subjective.... Eg. for my p5 CA, most in school failed maths and she only did 70 which was considered as ok but how??? It's still below the band 1 range.... I wonder how they manage those differences.
i stay at the west, so east schs out out. and no..no top 2 boys sch πŸ˜‰
i may try dsa academic to certain non-sap boys' sch offering dual-track πŸ˜‰ if ds1 proves that he is up to it. his chinese performance is inconsistent and i hope that i can save the heart attack during psle.

To me if the child can get into these top schools thru academic then most likely the PSLE results will also meet the min requirement. If the child gets in thru sports/other CCAs then a lot of time will be spent on training/competitions and hence not much time left for study. For other better schools if the PSLE results is above avg (240+) i think it should not be a problem getting in.

            .
i think dsa is an insurance thingy ba....
actually which schs with 240+ cop have dsa? i only know those schs with dsa have cop of over 250-255. πŸ˜“

              hi pignite,
i guess, if the kid's mine is pretty made up, unless we can motivate them again, it is likely that at this age, they will want it their way.
but is he doing very well in his current cca now? if so, won't he find it a pity not to specialise in it?

Not to worry, there are few reasonably good school with 240+ COP in the west for our consideration namely, Nanhua, Fairfield Methodist, Clementi Town at Clementi area, Swiss Cottage at Bukit Gombak or Bukit Panjang Gov at Choa Chu Kang area. Not forgetting RVH at Boon Lay though it may have a higher pre-requitsites.

For my DD, we have to give DSA a miss since she does not have a decent CCA to qualify for it 😒

DSA is both good and bad. Yes, it’s an insurance for the child if unexpectedly something goes wrong during PSLE. But I’ve heard from other parents that the child will be made to go for practices everyday for the sport/ music practice that he DSA through. A girl fr RGS told me that her friends who DSA into that school, but who couldn’t keep up their grades, were made to see the principal every month, with their parents, to discuss their academic progress, but still made to go for practices everyday. I guess it’s to be expected, because you are in that school to excel in that field, and if other kids can both excel in sports and do well academically, then, to continue in the school, you have try to excel at both too.

But another mum said that if you DSA via a CCA you will automatically be placed in the school team without having to go for try outs and can then participate in inter school competitions right fr the start of the year.
So, as usual, it’s up to the individual.

This DSA discussion led me to think back the time when I need to do the P1 registration for DD1 πŸ˜‚

You have a group of friends who said,\" Aiyoh, so fast -- gonna register for P1 lioa whoa; which school you targetting huh? Your Jurong area not many good school!\"

Another group will say,\" It's ok - no matter where your child schooling, ultimately all need to sit for PSLE and you still have chance to choose a GOOD Sec School via DSA!\"

So, now i have come to this juncture and the mixture of the above two say,\" Oh, you must choose the RIGHT CCA for your girl NOW so 2 years later she can DSA to a GOOD school! And also hor -- you must check and update yourself which are the GOOD sec school with COP >240!\"

To all the above, I can only reply with a :thankyou: :salute: and say (smilingly πŸ˜‰ ),\" I will do my best as a supporting mummy but ultimately she is the one taking PSLE in Y2014 so it depends on her not me!\" :siam:
