      Can somebody please help with this question?

      Betina spent $20 on some stickers and bookmarks. She bought 6 times as many stickers as bookmarks. Each bookmark cost 30 cents more than a sticker. She spent $4 more on the stickers than on the bookmarks. What was the cost of a bookmark?

      TIA.

        Hi

        Amount spent on stickers ------ 12
        Amount spent on bookmarks ------- 8

        She bought 6 times as many stickers as bookmarks.

        Bookmarks ------ 1 unit
        Stickers ------- 6 units

        Hence, 1 unit of stickers ------- 12/6 ------- 2

        1 unit of bookmarks ------- 8

        There is an extra of 6 (8-2) because the bookmark costs 30 cents more than a sticker.

        Number of bookmarks ------- 600/30 ------ 20

        Therefore cost of 1 bookmark -------- 800/20 ------- 40 cents.

        Check

        120*10 ------- 1200
        20*40 ------ 800

        Best wishes

          Thanks alot, tianzhu. Forgot that we should compare one unit of bookmark with one unit of stickers so we can make use of the difference of $0.30 to find out how many bookmarks there are in 1 unit.

          Many thanks, indeed. Have a good weekend!

                Need help on this question:

                There were some pens and pencils in a box. When Ali took out 24 pencils, there are 5 times as many pens as pencils left. If he had taken out 60% of the pens from the box instead, he would have twice as many pencils as pens left. How many pens were in the bo at first?

                TIA!

                        Hi
                        after Ali took out 24 pencils,
                        pens : pencils --> 5u : 1u

                        at first,
                        pens : pencils --> 5u : 1u + 24

                        If 60% of pens is taken out,
                        pens : pencils --> 2u : 1u + 24 = 1 : 2

                        cross-multiply/equalize,
                        4u = 1u + 24
                        1u --> 8

                        Number of pens in the box at first --> 5 x 8 = 40

                        cheers.
