I am not a supporter of MOE. I believe there are still passionate teachers around. Teachers who care, motivate and teach. Teachers who find ways to explain to kids if they do not understand.

Son's tutors are doing what school teachers should be doing. My boy tells me what his teachers do:
*come to class, give them past year papers to do while he sits at his desk.
*another teacher tells the class answers for worksheets done, kids swop worksheets to mark.
*give projects like 'what sec school they wish to attend' and form your own group.

I heard similar scenario in some \"popular schools\" especially for those best classes with school claimed \" best teacher\" . Usually, these classes with most(nearly all) students attending tuition outside the school.

My son is not in top class...so maybe that's why I have to spend so much money on tuition. Close to $2k.

I believe you are not seeing with your own eyes is because you are not attending the class your your son mah.....and just re-quote what you said a while ago

Pei Hwa teachers have not been doing what they are supposed to do and your son's tutors have to do what the school teachers should be doing.

Which parent doesn’t want an intelligent kid? Then he/she will go to top class…have dedicated teachers. But again in top class, these kids are fighting to stay at the top 5…the difference in marks is minimal, maybe 0.5 or 1 mark. Oh yes, they definitely have tuition bcos 98 is insufficient.

The point I am stressing is, even top classes have tuition. So what about the rest?

The point is in the reason for tuition.

Cos they want to stay in front or cos they are failing and need the additional coaching. And again, what is the reason for them not doing well, because the teacher is not teaching or because the child really may not be of that calibre or lack positive attitude and support.

As many as I have heard about kids struggling in school because of lousy teachers, I have also heard of kids who do not have tuition and still do well and decently and as I have also pointed out in another thread, there are also those who have tuition for everything and still did not do too well.

Yes, there are many flaws in the system but saying that all need tuition because schools are not teaching, that is totally not true.

My husband came from another small island in the Indian Ocean. He told me that he had tuition from secondary school till A levels. I was shocked and asked him why. Apparently, the school teachers there don’t teach everything in the syllabus during class. The students will then engage their class teachers for extra tuition outside of class to cover those ‘missing syllabus’. Wah, like dat oso can!
