Son's tutors are doing what school teachers should be doing. My boy tells me what his teachers do:
*come to class, give them past year papers to do while he sits at his desk.
*another teacher tells the class answers for worksheets done, kids swop worksheets to mark.
*give projects like 'what sec school they wish to attend' and form your own group.
My son is not in top class...so maybe that's why I have to spend so much money on tuition. Close to $2k.
Pei Hwa teachers have not been doing what they are supposed to do and your son's tutors have to do what the school teachers should be doing.

The point I am stressing is, even top classes have tuition. So what about the rest? -

Cos they want to stay in front or cos they are failing and need the additional coaching. And again, what is the reason for them not doing well, because the teacher is not teaching or because the child really may not be of that calibre or lack positive attitude and support.
As many as I have heard about kids struggling in school because of lousy teachers, I have also heard of kids who do not have tuition and still do well and decently and as I have also pointed out in another thread, there are also those who have tuition for everything and still did not do too well.
Yes, there are many flaws in the system but saying that all need tuition because schools are not teaching, that is totally not true. -
My husband came from another small island in the Indian Ocean. He told me that he had tuition from secondary school till A levels. I was shocked and asked him why. Apparently, the school teachers there don’t teach everything in the syllabus during class. The students will then engage their class teachers for extra tuition outside of class to cover those ‘missing syllabus’. Wah, like dat oso can!

there is no doubt of crossing the US$1B mark in SG by now but i still have to :udawoman: u for contributing 0.000002% of the tuition industry here... btw i'm also contributing to it like as if CPF or nation building..... :celebrate:pinky:
we spent US$680M on tuition in 2008, maybe by now could have cross the US$1B mark :yikes:
I have nothing against my tutors...in fact, I love them very much because they are the ones who EDUCATE my son.
Crossing the billion dollar mark is not surprising. I spend $2K a month just for my son's tutors alone. -

You are paying to train someone for good grades, not paying to train someone to be smart.

Just wondering.. is tuition the reason why so many \"highly qualified\" pple in high ranking position CANNOT Perform..? They are trained to get good grades.. but apparently..... their abilities are limited..
for e.g. \"Flood are caused by a sudden increase in rainfall..\" oh.. what a great discovery.. other might had believe it is due a sudden increase in fish population maybe......? forcing all the water out of the drains......
If there are no tuition or enrichment classes in providing unfair advantage in the training for good grades.. And every teachers teach what they are supposed to teach, maybe only the capable ones with REAL abilities shine though and emerge at the top..
Be honest.. you(all readers, not referring to janet) believe enrichment centers and tuition center is exam result orientated, or focus on imparting knowledge? -

I think this is not very fair to the school PH to say this leh. Every school has less than desirable teachers, including NYPS. I have a friend who can choose to put her 2 boys in either NYPS or PH as husband is the old boy of one school and wife an old gal of another. Wife (My friend lah) told me she will never dare to put her kids in NYPS as she knows the pressure of studying there, knowing her kids are not the 'naturally smart kind', as she studied there herself and now she also has many neighbours' kids in the school, with the grannies/parents complaining about having to bring the kids for several tuitions trying to play catch up with the other smarter kids . Her kids are now in PH, not in the first 2 classes but ok. Still, her kids have tuitions for all subjects, but she still says that definitely it is better for her kids to be in PH than NY. NY - too competitive.

May be should also post to the Pri 1 registration thread to warn the parents to think twice / thrice about enrolling the kids at Pei Hwa. Such irresponsible teachers you have there
I also have a friend who moved within 1 km of NYPS and got her first kid into NYPS. Now, she regrets. She told me that the school is not as fantastic as she thought. There was theft in class, the form teacher s**ks and she will stay as the form teacher for more than a year. Her dd got 80-somethings for Math which she thought was OK but it is considered no good to the school, so her dd needs to stay back for math remedial class. Needless to say, she thought she made a mistake trying so hard to get her kids into NYPS. She feels like a lousy parent because her kid is ranked 'below average' in class and now has low esteem. A neighbour of mine, told me that her son's NYPS teacher scolded him 'stupid' and sent his kid's book flying across the classroom. Yes, this can happen even in the best school. But I think it can happen in any school. I tend to think that some classes have better treatment/teachers than other classes, regardless of the school's ranking. My kids don't have terrible teachers, though some can be slightly better.
I am not slamming any school, in fact I like both NY and PH, but I suppose every parent should know that not every student will have the luck of getting the best teachers in school to teach them? Shouldn't we be more objective? For tuitions/enrichments (to me, they are the same) I spend $58/wk on my no.1, $73/wk on my no.2 and $0 on my no.3. With less tuitions to rush for, they have more time to enjoy their childhood. The kids are getting very good results by my definition and based on their own abilities. Their classmates are always rushing to various tuitions/enrichments and even have no time for project work after school.
Like vk I am quite tired of all the whining. While they expressed real frustrations, I think it's not fair to push all the blame on the school/teacher. -
Actually US$680mil seems pretty low. Seeing how everyone is saying everyone is having tuition. Even if you double it now, it still seems pretty low.
