Asia spending billions on tutors: study

But more qns does not mean result should suffer.
For example, we know what’s expected of P1 level, so we gradually prepare the kids in pre-school.
Likewise for PSLE, the kids should be gradually and consistently prepared for it and not be shocked in P5. We have to be fair to the kids. -
so when is a good time or the right time or perfect time to start on the real PLE format ?
in order that the kids are not "shocked" by the format, perhaps they should introduce it in Pri 1
why is there to whine when they step up / progress to harder stuff in their academic progress ?
or are we all so deluded that every kid must and able to perform to the same result ? -
How come Tuition-bashing thread morphed into PH-bashing thread?
In the recently concluded Phase 1 registration, PH almost 60% P1 vacancy filled. I think that % is the highest for this yr’s Phase 1. This phase is for applicants with sibling(s) currently studying in the sch rite?
If the sch is so bad, I wonder why all these parents - who have first-hand experience on what makes the sch tick and how the sch has been setting killer papers all these yrs - continue to trust the sch by registering their other child in the same sch?
No offense to anyone. Just trying to express a different perspective here. Different parents may have different encounters with the sch’s staff but the statistics tells its own story. -

on a side note....
There's a reason why sibling are given priority..
And, the logical choice for parents is to enrol the kid in the same school for practicality.. -
What’s so unusual about preparing kids consistently and gradually for PSLE? For example, I don’t understand why science is only introduced in P3. I think it should be in P1.
I’m not expecting all kids to do excellently well. But I do not think that it need to be a shock. Why can’t it be a gentle process, as in consistent and gradual? Either way, there will be kids who get all As and kids who go Normal Academic and Normal Technical.
Hmmmm I’m not PH bashing hor. I was not even aware I was pin-pointing at any school sigh
Sigh, I’m not even arguing for equal grades wor.
What’s so bad about being fair to the kids and giving them a fighting chance. Again not arguing for all kids obtaining excellent grades. I’m not even arguing all schools to be like nyps or raffles hor. I just think that preparing for PSLE does not need to be a rude-awakening.
Oh ya, although I only mention nyps and raffles I do not mean other schools are not worthy and that they do not have good trs hor. -

Practicality aside, if a sch is crap [no sch is perfect, but I certainly don't expect nor can afford to pay $2K per mth on tuition for one child alone], even if you offer my child a place on a silver platter, I won't touch it with a 9-foot pole.

Anyway it's best to let the sch's track record speak for itself. -

P1-4 were not easy to pass...the stress of maintaining his average position, not falling downwards :nailbite:What's so unusual about preparing kids consistently and gradually for PSLE? For example, I don't understand why science is only introduced in P3. I think it should be in P1.

At P5, MOE feels that the kids are mature enough overnight to kill them with tough Math prob questions...18 of them. Section A (no calculator), every question can only use 2 marks to get it done.
It is not easy to teach 40 kids how to solve those tough problem sums. I dont know how to, even after reading it several times. What about 10+/11 year olds? That is, if teacher knows how to teach and passionate enough to do so. If not, tutors have to come in.
Science is not easy. I've been through it. Answering OE questions is no walk in the park. Even those MCQs...simply not just whack an answer. Teaching my son science at P3 was nail-biting. Diversity itself consists of 5 topics.
Bashing the school is not my intention. Of course who hasn't experienced terrible teachers? P6 is a crucial year, strangely i need tutors now more than his earlier years in school. -
:offtopic: maybe but did you all read in today's ST about the 5-yr old boy who attend 2 kindergarten a day ? apparently it's quite common with parents who want the best of both worlds to prepare their kids for primary school. kind of  I feel.

Hubby told me his colleague's child attends 2 kindergarten...morn is to attend one which conducts lessons in mandarin, then another kindy which is English-speaking. Child eats biscuits or sandwiches on the way to attend afternoon session.
This is before P1. When the 5 year old boy in ST goes to p1, wont he be having tuition for all 3 subjects ? Not surprising. -
Heard that attending two kindergartens is quite common nowadays! Some are attending kindergarten in the morning and then attending back to back enrichment classes in the afternoon. I personally know my friend’s 4 yo boy attending two kindergartens. Poor boy is so tire that he normally goes to bed at abt 6 plus pm right after dinner and the next day is another busy day for him! However, I noticed that these kids are very good in coping with heavy workloads/programs when they grown up and always full of energy…
