different punishment for similar offence - why?

That is why I always say, don’t say unsubstantiated stuff unless you can back it up
who knows one day MOE will refer to AGC on unfounded aspersion cast on their schools and teachers, esp sweeping comments like "teachers don’t teach" -

Blogger removes post on Woffles Wu case

SINGAPORE - The author of the Yawning Bread blog has taken down a post on the case involving prominent surgeon Woffles Wu and posted a letter of apology after being contacted by the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC).
In the letter of apology, Mr Alex Au said his June 18 post, \"Woffles Wu case hits a nerve\", scandalised the courts and misrepresented various facts in relation to the case.
Wu, 52, had abetted Mr Kuan Yit Wah, 83, in providing misleading information to the police for a speeding offence involving his car in November 2006. Wu was fined S$1,000, while Mr Kuan was given a stern warning. There was no evidence of payment or gratification given to Mr Kuan.
In a letter served via email to Mr Au last Friday, the AGC said the blog post \"alleges that our courts are biased towards those whom you describe as well-connected\". Describing Mr Au's allegations as \"scurrilous and false\", the AGC noted that Mr Au referred to past cases without specifying them.
The AGC added: \"In essence you allege that our entire judicial system has been biased for a long time.\"
It also pointed out that Mr Au's \"allegation of judicial bias … is based on a number of distortions on the facts of the case.\"
Specifically, Mr Au had implied that Wu was treated favourably by being charged under section 81(3) of the Road Traffic Act instead of section 182 of the Penal Code, said the AGC.
It pointed out that before February 2008, both sections attracted the \"same maximum fines and the same maximum custodial sentence\" of six months.
The AGC also noted that the cases Mr Au cited had involved false statements \"used to cover up more serious offences like rash driving, drink driving, driving without a licence and so on\".
It said: \"Cases show that when the false declaration related to a minor offence, such as speeding just above the warning range and which is normally compoundable (as in the Woffles Wu case), generally a fine was imposed.\"
In its letter to Mr Au, the AGC said it would not commence proceedings for contempt of court if he withdrew his post within five days and published the AGC's letter and an enclosed apology. In a press release yesterday, it reiterated that Mr Au's \"serious allegations\" scandalised the courts.
The AGC confirmed that the post was taken down by Tuesday and the apology put up in its place.
But it added: \"Mr Au did not however post the letter from AGC as he was asked to. A reminder was sent to him on (Tuesday) of the requirement to post the letter as well; he was asked to do so within two days of the date of the reminder.\" -

Someone posts a picture of an open train door, then suddenly, OMG, SMRT screw up again, TOC message board lights up.

Honestly, I really cannot accept some of Alex Au's ideas - some of his blog posts which suggests that gay couples should be allowed to adopt children, and marriage is not the only approach to boost population etc
His socio-political analysis are sharp and deep. However, he keep saying gays are discriminated and demand more rights. It's not as if we stone gays here. They recently had this Pinky dot event! What exactly does he want? :censored:

Stark unfairness in sentences for similar offence is indeed very glaring in some examples.
Consider a man jailed for stealing $32 to buy food for his wheel chaired mother. But a rich man son was only fined and let off for stealing $13000.
Look at Breadtalk's George Quek... rammed his Porsche into police cars at a road block and arrested for drunk driving but got away with just a small fine when ordinary Singaporeans committing similar offences have all been jailed for months.

Listen to Shanmugam bash Sylvia in parliament over this today.
Easy, eloquent, logical argument that completely demolishes any allegation of wrong-doing on the AG’s part.
Logic over knee-jerk emotional politicking, always…
