So many agencies, centres and freelance tutors. It can take up to weeks to find a good one! How do you find a good tuition (be it class or individual) for your child?

        Go for recommendations.
Friends who recommend are likely to give names of reliable tutors.
No point trying one after another...money is wasted and time doesn't permit...furthermore, the poor child will have problems adjusting.

Getting a tutor from ads is trial and error…very scary.

If there are recommendations, usually the tutor is reliable or nobody will dare to recommend. My son’s Math tutor was recommended by my neighbour and she is really dedicated and professional.

Won’t 1-to-1 be more effective also? or the benefits for 1-to-1 don’t outweigh the costs for your kids?

I have not sent my kids for tuition before but am contemplating to do so perhaps end of the year or next year… coz I’ve been hearing friends kids not being able to cope with school without tuition… should I send them for private tuition or to a tuition centre? Any mums here have good experience to share?

Btw, is group or private tuition better? which did you all choose?

There are benefits to both. In a group class, it costs less but time is needed to bring the child to the centre and there is waiting time. Also, in a classroom environment, there are sharing of ideas and opinions which the child can learn from.

In a private class, you get better attention from the teacher but it costs more. In writing especially, I find that the child get better attention from the teacher and the teacher can identify weaknesses to improve. In a group class, the teachers will just put their comments on the writing and the child will not get the individual attention needed and will not know exactly how to improve his own piece of writing. Group class tends to proivde model essays which are not exactly useful as I feel the child needs to know how to improve on his own piece of work. You can't exactly learn from someone's model essays.

This is my personal experience for my child. At one point, it got a bit exasperating for us as we kept getting negative comments on the group class writing assignments and were lost how to improve. We subsequently went on a couple of months of private writing classes just before PSLE and it works miracles.

My son has one to one tuition for math and group tuition for science. So far, his math and science results are quite consistent so I will just let him continue with them.

I too am going through the process for finding a private tutor for my child. There are so many agencies. Arranged for one and she didn't show up last minute!

Would greatly appreciate any parents here who would recommend a private tutor to us. My son is in P3 and we are looking for a tutor to help him particularly in English, if can cover Science and Maths subsequently will be great as well.

I can teach English to your child. I have 4 yrs experience. My students have grown with me and watching them improve in school has been very satisfying. Do let me know if you are interested!
