Hi. I am a victim of cyber harrassment - this anon has been emailing me and making accusations about me and my family. I am now annoyed enough to want to take legal action. I now have this person’s IP address (after trying so long to find out! This auntie not so tech-savvy). So my question is, how on earth can I find out who this person is based on his/her IP address?? Do I need to write to all of the service providers here to find out?? I am speaking to a lawyer next week but next week feels too long to wait! Appreciate any advice or ideas anyone might have.

Why not just block all emails from that person?

I don’t think the service providers will reveal the identity of the person. Have you filed a police report?

I could but I want to pursue a civil suit. And I need to have the identity of the email sender before I can do that.

I haven't filed a police report yet because the content of the email would not constitute criminal intent...at least from my layman's understanding.

                hired a PI.

They might have some ways to get the person’s identity… well… they’re in this trade.

Quite tricky to find a person's identity from the email's IP address. If the said person sends the email using a web-based client, the IP address will not be an actual one unless he/she uses an OS based email client such as Live Mail or Microsoft Outlook. If using web-based client, short of hacking into Yahoo or Gmail server, it's pretty much impossible to trace back to the actual person.

Besides, if I want to do this kind of stunt, I would also make sure to cover my track even more by using proxy server or 'hijacking' an unsecured WIFI connection. A poor girl mistakenly got arrested last time because her neighbour hijacked her WIFI and posted bomb threats online.

Why are we talking about ip address when it is email?

Email address is better than ip address anytime.

I don't think anyone will be dumb enough to make accusations online using their personal or company email. Like that will be very easy to trace already since nowadays people are linked so closely to social network as Facebook or Twitter.

You can’t get anything out of the IP address from the service providers unless it is ordered by the court.

Consult a lawyer if you want to pursue it legally.
