Choosing and Evaluating Primary Schools

Haha.... I am actually more than 2km from all these schools, but boh pian lah, all those around me super hot this year!
Where are you located? Qifa is in West Coast, Pei Tong is in Clementi. Qifa posts PSLE results of its top 10 students on its website...they are generally good enough for admission to the top 10 secondary schools. Pei Tong will almost certainly have space in 2C supplementary, Qifa may or may not....it fills up faster. Not sure about Bukit Timah.cchs2:

Today's ST has a parent writing in to ask for abolishing of Phase 2A: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Sto ... 23421.html
Priority for citizens not effective enough
Published on Jul 18, 2012
I AM due to register my elder son for Primary 1 under Phase 2B starting tomorrow. The nearest school, Ai Tong, is a three-minute walk from our home.
After last Friday's breakdown of the remaining vacancies after Phase 2A(2), the school has only 38 vacancies left, 19 of which will be up for grabs under Phase 2B.
The vacancy crunch signals a larger issue that remains unaddressed.
Giving citizens priority over non-citizens will not help much.
Last year's balloting data for the school shows a success rate of 39.21 per cent for Phase 2B and 29.41 per cent for Phase 2C, all of which affect pupils living within 1km of the school. Some 60 per cent and 70 per cent of the pupils living within 1km who registered under phases 2B and 2C, respectively, did not obtain a place.
Clearly, children of citizens living close to the school should be given higher priority.
If last year's figures are any yardstick, this year's batch will be denied a fair chance as well.
Sending our child to a school far away is unduly stressful. When the child is old enough to take part in co-curricular activities, parents face a headache as the school buses operate only on fixed timelines, and the child is too young to travel on public transport alone.
While it is fair for the Ministry of Education to give priority to pupils with siblings studying in the school, there is no need for the other phases that follow in the current system.
Priority should be given to all pupils living within 1km of the school.
Those who live farther away should be subject to balloting for the remaining vacancies.
The ministry must adopt a more holistic approach to address the frustration over primary school registration.

In life, we cannot please everyone. The ones who don't get it will say it is not fair and that teh system is broken. The ones who have it say that it is working and that it is the right way.
Surely there are other schools that are within 1km besides Ai Tong right? I also wonder if she would be crying foul over the system if the school within 3 mins' walk is a neighbourhood school and not Ai Tong. -
Hi,
i am registering my dd next yr. between Poi Ching School (SAP Sch) n Nan Chiau Pri Sch, which school would you choose? We are both 1-2km from both Sch under P2B. We PV in poi Ching n shkk (3rd yr). Poi Ching is current property n Nan Chiau is under construction (TOP 2013/4). In dilemma… I heard NCPS is soon a SAP school, not sure when this will happen. Is that true? -
Not abolish Phase 2A. They should give non-SC siblings of current non-SC students, and the non-SC alumni less priority... with the policy changes, it still does not affect the non-SCs in Phase 1 and Phase 2A. They still have priority over most of the SCs and they will rush for the earlier phases since they still qualify for them.
That's why some popular schools see even worse situations coz now, the PR alumni/siblings must die-die enter that school even if they live at the other end of the island.
This situation will be prevalent until many years later when the last of the PR students (with no other younger sibling) graduate, and their kids too, and their grandkids too... no end lah.
Just accept and earn more money to buy more houses within 1km of the schools you want.

That is worse! Housing fot HDB is already in the rise. I am wondering if my DS and DD will be able to even afford hosuing when they are older at this curent rate! If have to add on cnsideration of buying near schools.... Faint... -

believe MOE scrutinize this year data closely, examine how effective is their policy impemented ?Not abolish Phase 2A. what if scaly announce new changes to next year P1 registration: take out all the non SC sbilings / alumni from Phase 1 & 2A ?
These non SC places released will then be allocated to the SC Phase 2B & 2C applicants. This then truly & effectively become the clear definition of \"Absolute Priority for SC citizens\", across all Phases. -
Then hurrah

I’m going to register my DS at St.Gabriel’s tomorrow. Am within 1km so it should be no sweat getting in. Still feeling a little nervous though as I’ve agonised over this for the last three years. I still have questions racing through my mind - "is this a good school?", "is this school good for my son?", "are other options like Kuo Chuan better?", "should I give up my place at St. Gabs and go for ACJS in Phase 2C - further from home, but a school I feel a connection with as it’s my alma mater?"…
But I am thankful that I have options, and thankful that even the "worst" school in Singapore is likely to be a far better option than what many children in Asia have.
So to all Mummies and Daddies out there, Singaporeans and PRs, my thoughts and prayers go out to you. I hope everyone gets a place in the school that is best for their child. One that would nurture them to the best of their abilities and impart good values to them.
My best wishes to all! -

Hi, citygirl. Glad to seeya in KS forum again. Both the ACPS & ACJS very tough this year. At least u have a good alternative wheras if I failed the 2B & 2C balloting, my DS will be posted to Balestiar Primary. I'm sort of regretted my decision to forgo my alma mater and chose to try my hand on a school which is so limited in vacancies. Sigh...... Nothing much I could do now but keep my fingers crossed and pray hard.I'm going to register my DS at St.Gabriel's tomorrow. Am within 1km so it should be no sweat getting in.
