Thank you all for taking the time to reply. The weekend has been much better but not 100% perfect. :slapshead: I am glad to know that others find it a challenge too. I talked to her, saying that from now on if she wanted to watch tv or go on the computer she will have to earn the right first. We have tried also doing the work in bits- some in the morning followed by a long break then finishing the rest off later. Our home is never quiet but I am trying to just be alone with her.

Whilst I do think a private tutor would be best for my sanity- I feel I know her the best and home teaching fits better with our schedules.

Sigh… my dd also has that ‘bo chap’ attitude. This morning, her tutor just walked out of the class. And yet she still can smile and continue to watch TV after the tutor left.

Really lost on how to motivate her to study hard.

Study environment is very important. Make sure there isn't any distraction
such as the little brother, television, computer etc. Best time to teach her is when the brother is in school or separate them when he is at home. Keep him occupied so that he will not disturb her when she is doing her work.

Usually, my husband will take care my P6 boy & I will take care of the P1. After all, kids are kids. We separate them during study or homework time or they will end up playing or talking. How is your girl's school performance in P4? Since she is only in P4 , she will have 2 more years to prepare for
PSLE. P5 is very crucial as most of the PSLE syllabus will be covered in this year.

              yes, home tuition is :moneyflies:

Agreed. Unless we take over the teaching then our pocket will not get hurts. If your child is self motivated & self driven, don't even need tuition. But not everyone is that lucky. :boogie:

My daughter will be starting p5 next year, throughout this year i have started doing work with her at home.We do not do nearly as much as many other parents around 1.5 hours some days but less on others, but she is still so definant. We arrange a timetsble to start work but still she cries and runs away most of the time- wasting time. Some days she will work properly but others she will be terrible.Yesterday she promised she would start later because she had been on a trip and i agreed, but when the time came to sit down she kept on saying \"later\".We started but she could not concentrate, as kept on talking to brother - i got angry and left her and cried. We had visited the secondary school that day and the school was wonderful. I just fear she won't gain a place as I know the level others are doing and I am tired of making her work when she does not listen. Can anyone offer any help?

Hi, orangetree, my 2nd DS is worse than yours. Even for some days, I can't even ask him to do anything at all. Either he took too much time napping or did his schoolwork so slow & also occupied with too much homework at a time, that I cannot even chuck in anytime with him. On top of that, he has no tuition and had cca two days in a week plus two other cca outside school. I'm already taken one of his cca outside school, now left with 3.

Sometimes, he threw temper when I gave him some work to do. I think not only you and me has the same problem, others too. Do spend time talking to your kid, knows what she wants and what she is thinking and how to go about and work it out with her. Also explaining why she need to do what you had in mind for her.

Talking and understanding her problem (maybe she wants to do something else) and yours (you busy, not always free) is very important, its part of the process of growing up for the children and us as parents. I'm still learning. Don't give up. When stress, move away a while with a cup of tea or drinks or your favourite food, it'll bring you back energy and clear your mind too!

You can keep the brother preoccupied with other things so as not to distract her. I understand sometimes, its hard to separate the two. So let both work on different things or stay at different room. I had 3, so I understand and the small one had to tag along whenever I go so much distraction for my DS. Always remind her to focus before she start doing her work.

Reward system works for most kids but not my 2nd DS. You can also split your one and half hour to 3 intervals of half an hour each. Like completing an interval entitle to 15min own leisure time, something like that.

Hope what I've written here can help you a little. 😄
