Lynn2010: The criteria are the usual academic and CCA ones. ACS(I) is hot on competitive sports and SYF-type arts, so those talents are prized. There is actually a points system for quickly evaluating student applications, but I can't remember offhand how it goes.

When my DS was preparing for DSA to Year 1 IP, he had to fill in a form where points (out of 100) were given according to these categories:

Special Academic & Creativity Achievements & Awards e.g. New South Wales Mathematics Competition, Mathematics Olympiad, Commonwealth Essay Writing Competition & Edusave Awards. - 30 points

CCA - international, national and school-based levels of participation - 30 points

Leadership & Community Service e.g. Internal & external CIP, prefect, sports captain, other office bearers in UYOs - 30 points

Other Special Talents, Sustained Interests & Hobbies & Project Work - 10 points

My DS also applied for DSA to Year 1 IP.

So is this the first stage of selection, where they quickly sieve out the ones who don't qualify as all-rounders or have the intrinsic qualities they want in a DSA student, before going on to look at their HAST results?

What are the chances for a DSA student who did very well for HAST but is not a sports person or a school prefect?

Oodles Mummy: Actually it's almost the other way round. ACS(I) gets an extra grant from MOE for each student who has done well in HAST. This grant is for the education of gifted students. From economic principles alone, it's quite clear that the school has to establish that as many of its students are 'gifted' as possible. That's how they can afford to air-condition the classrooms, canteen, labs etc. and pay for a very good teacher:student ratio as well.

So the main criteria is first to perform in HAST? Then they look into other aspects?

Any idea in the past how many mainstream boys will be offered CO for DSA since I assume priority is given to GEP boys?

Actually, it depends on how many GEP boys apply. You can't assume priority is given to GEP boys, since a good HAST result or equivalent will also qualify students to be admitted as 'gifted' students. Many GEP boys from all GEP centres seem to want to go to RI, which is fine because RI has no feeder schools of its own.
