Mummies: His autism test is coming up, I'm nervy. What should I be expecting? My son's not very expressive and may say 'I don't know' as the easy way out even though he actually knows the answer. I'm worried the result may do injustice to what he knows & can do.

When we got our diagnosis on dd3 when she was 3 yo, we questioned quite a few things - the methodology, misdiagnosis, biasness, unfairness ... we didnt agree with the assessment itself, how the psychologist conducted the assessment, how she dealt with dd3 ...etc. maybe it was my dealing with the initial denial and the subsequent phases of why-me and what ifs. It took me some time to get through that stage and its emotional upheavals, while we were at the same time putting in programs to help dd3.
I dont mean to be a wet blanket here, cos mummies here have been very encouraging to put things into perspective on a positive note. but I'm just being candid here where if it doesnt turn out the way you want it to be, just be cognizant that it may still hit you hard emotionally. Maybe I am weaker emotionally, but I found that I needed some time to self-heal the same time while I dealt with dd3's issues.
Whatever the case, the bottom line is not to give up. -
Thanks mummies
I was really nervous about his haircut and I had to take half day leave to bring him to the salon on a quiet afternoon. The stylist was amused that both hubby and I had to take off from work just to bring him to a haircut. And we prepared so many things for him, brought my own clipper, biscuits, ipad and a cover that we bought from Isetan to put on him to prevent hair from falling on his clothes. We were afraid that he will refuse to wear the cover provided by the salon, so we bought one ourselves. And before the haircut, we put it over him for him to get use to it. So at the end, both hubby and I were so relieved that he was so cooperative during the whole session, he was just concentrating on the ipad and let the stylist do whatever she wants with his hair. Phew! -

I got the picture story from the internet. Don’t have the url with me now. I just googled and found the picture. -
Immeemee: I'm rather weak emotionally too. Actually, I crashed when the dr suggested to put him up for autism test. Even though it wasn't the diagnosis, I felt that it was & i hit rock bottom. So I can understand what you are saying here. Im just bracing myself not to cry in front of the dr when the diagnosis is out even though i somehow know at the back of my mind. You mummies, are really awesome. I'm (still) reading your past posts & it has given me alot of strength & determination.
DoubleE: what was it about haircut that your son is afraid of? My son is afraid of the loose hair that falls on his body (although covered). He was fine with it when younger but until he's big mouth mother pointed all the loose hair on his body, he started freaking out. I even pointed and went 'eeeeeeee'
my fault. I didn't know it would freak him out so bad.
Simkhoo & mashy; ok got it. I shall rejoice that he is able to move on quickly, indeed it's actually a strength. Now, you made me feel so proud of my boy! -

Actually I cried right in front of the psychologist as she was talking to us about dd3's diagnosis, cos I couldnt contain it. If crying is an expression of an emotion, its only natural to let flow your feelings.Immeemee: I'm rather weak emotionally too. Mashy,
Your boy is now in P1? I recalled you mention he dun like to write. So how do you get him to do his homework? ESP Chinese, my boy now still can’t write nor copy at all. -
Recently I attended the PTC of my son’s cc. I feel that the teacher there like given up on him. They show me some of his work and told me "I am surprised he can do this". I was like come on la, how come u all treat him like stupid.
Lately he started to talk more and the teachers tell me "he actually understand and can reply to us". I realized the teachers all dun understand ASD. sigh. Confirm I dun want to delay my son to P1. I dun see how staying one yr in current cc will help him at all.
