My son started Pri One with no knowledge of Chinese at all, only knew how to write his name, the 3 character, and cannot even read this own name in Chinese. For 5 years, we worked very hard every day, burnt midnite oil when ever needed ...... prayed ๐Ÿ™ to anything possible.. but he still cannot speak ONE full sentence in Chinese by himself, he was Primary 5, mark=around 62 no matter how hard we tried. Almost given up.... Almost need to request to drop the chinese subject for PSLE. feel like :stupid:

.... and realized that the fault was with me, NOT my son. ๐Ÿ˜ข Wrong method used etc etc etc. Talked to son, find out problem, resolved, work together etc.

Another one year of hard work every other day and never give up attitude, both of us, ..... 81.3 for prelim chinese, able to read in chinese finally, full passage, with funny \"ah mo\" tone, still....... able to do chinese oral finally.... and able to write proper chinese compo, finally.

And our rewards - A for Chinese PSLE (Targeted A* though ) and Higher Chinese for Sec One.

Informed my mom who was shocked - \" A for chinese ? Your the cute son who cannot understand and converse in chinese at all, one ? \"

My son still have a long to go even if he scored a \"A\" in PSLE ..... for example he still cannot repeat after \".... ๅธฎไฝ ๆŠŠไป–็š„ๅฟƒ็ป™ๆŒ–ๅ‡บๆฅ๏ผŒๆ‹”ๅ…‰ไป–็š„็šฎ๏ผŒๆŠŠไป–็ ๆˆๅๅ—ๅ…ซๅ—, ็ป™ไฝ ๅƒ๏ผโ€œ .... at least he can understand and will LOL with us. We will work harder next year for his chinese speaking ...etc

So never give up..... on your son :salute:

Wow, jitancat, please share your effective and successful method!
My son has aggregate of 245, he wants to go to Victoria (COP=246), wonder whether is there any chance?

For me, it's a lot and a lot of hard works on the my side. ๐Ÿ˜ข My son was studying the Chinese subject and I was studying on how my son can study Chinese subject effectively in the shortest time, including how to interest him and how to provide him with the environment to study Chinese, so it was much more than what my son will be doing.

Thus I think ONLY the parent, who will understand the child most (must) , can do the job, not tuition teacher and not school teacher. And the parent must not give up at any time.

Also, I think, different methods will work on different child and different subjects and different time. So the parents will have to OBSERVE child reaction as it goes, keep revising your ways till the most effective ways, and most importantly, get FEEDBACK and DISCUSS with the child directly to find out the BEST WAY. And change as improvement shown .... cannot fixed on one method all the way as it will get stuck and the improvement stops.

For my son - in particular, he wants to participate and be interactive. :x He does not like to be \"ordered\" to do this assessment work or that, without knowing how the amount of work will help in his chinese, and in particular, to which part in his chinese. So I had to give these answers to him EACH time. And he wants me to estimate what marks he will get after his hard work EACH time.... and I had to give this answer too. :stupid:

I need to do a lot of analysis after each chinese test, tuition paper, assessment paper and my son knew that I worked very hard for his chinese. And after sometime, he trusted my judgement on each analysis and the estimated marks he will improved - so he work very hard, very willingly, and each time, he went to exam with an aim for improvement, marks estimated by me. So worked together ! :celebrate: :snuggles:

Assessments etc, ๅฌๅ†™'s etc all did not worked out for my son IF they were just \"throwing\" to him --- which happened in last 5 years. I threw threw threw ---> my son just did did did blindly, like a robot, ---> the answers were wrong wrong wrong, even with the same questions repeated. And I :stupid::stupid::stupid:

HOWEVER THE SAME THING, assessments etc, ๅฌๅ†™'s etc, tuitions added in the last year etc, they WILL help and a lot more if they were done with careful planning.

For one example, I did a detail study on his performance in past assessments, his school papers etc, his tuition papers. Decided to work on the ๅฎŒๆˆๅฏน่ฏ (his score 4/10). I will need to tell him why we should work on this, how we should work on it and why he will succeed scoring with this etc etc improved by ? marks etc. For first whole night about 4 hours, we worked only on this portion, extracted out from assessments books, papers and sometimes repeat doing over and over again, also explain explain and still explain. Next night, again etc. Also, to choose passages, starts from easier ones and slowly move to difficult ones. ---- then suddenly at one time, he started to score 10/10 for a few times and it kicked off ! He started to maintain 10/10 for ๅฎŒๆˆๅฏน่ฏ... and he was scoring 10/10 most of the time later in his assessment, tuition paper, school paper etc even with the difficult ones. Till PSLE, I never need to work on ๅฎŒๆˆๅฏน่ฏ any longer and he is still scoring 10/10 most of the time..... So our hardwork for this ---> improved 6 marks, as estimated/promised to him and he is very happy. And so on to next ....

Also, like the \".... ๅธฎไฝ ๆŠŠไป–็š„ๅฟƒ็ป™ๆŒ–ๅ‡บๆฅ๏ผŒๆ‹”ๅ…‰ไป–็š„็šฎ๏ผŒๆŠŠไป–็ ๆˆๅๅ—ๅ…ซๅ—, ็ป™ไฝ ๅƒ๏ผโ€œ it was said to him when cutting a fruit for him to eat after a meal .... it amused him very much and he wants to learn it to tell his friend the joke. But it is not manageable yet even getting \"A\" ..... so we still need to work on his chinese speaking..... carry on and never give up even if first attempt fails... and even if still failing....

Tuitions --- also moved from tuition A (2 months intensive, very very bad results ) to tuition B (6 months ) to tuition C (5 months)... BUT it was because my son informing me that its not helping or he could not improve anymore from there and the need to move on to better ones ..... And the tuition will not worked out well without my help, for my son. I need to monitor the tuition notes, the tuition lessons, tuitions assessment papers etc and I need to get feedback after every lesson from my son. NB : May not be same for every child, esp those who can be independent in learning for that subject.

Its too long already, very sorry, I tried to cut short as much as possible ..... above are good examples, I think. Hope it helps.

My son scored 257+1. His dream sch is Hwa Chong.Think he can try? :? :?

Hwa Chong Admin is very very friendly and good, she's Karen, I think. You may call her up or meet up some people in Hwa Chong tomorrow, open house. The staff there are also very helpful and they may tell/give information/past experience if you should try with your marks.

Last year t-score 259 is only a guide and it was for the intake for last year. This year t-score may be higher BUT also may be lower.... so I think checking out with Hwa Chong directly will help. If they are SURE, they will tell you to put them as FIRST CHOICE and inform you the likely chance to get in ... and if so then .....

If I recall rightly the NY principal said the COP should be 262.

COP include hcl??? if not then aww......

HCL allows the kid to take HCL in sec. Pass HCL in Sec then no need to take Chinese in JC. Very important !

                        maisy:
Yes and No. The schools only take some from 2nd choice when after taking in all the 1st choice (agg must meet COP), they still have vacancies left. And if after taking in all the 2nd choice candidates (again agg must meet cut off), they still have vacancies left, then yes they take in 3rd choice.... if after taking in 1st choice candidates, they are full...then sorry GAME OVER for u.

And if you really know what you are doing (like you blatantly said), you won't be here asking \"i m wondering if i can make it to Nan Hua...\" why should you even wonder since you have all the information w you ??? Cool down & don't be jumpy.... think carefully... and if you think you have been very wise, then good for you. And sorry to have poke my nose into your business. Cheers :celebrate:
