Doubt it will take only a decade or two for SG even when there is political will with infrastructure n systems in place.
We lack three other ingredients - tradition, overcoming inertia n a substantial domestic market.
US n d West has a long tradition in sports excellence as part of a holistic development of d individual. Not in d East for a long time.
Besides lack of tradition, overcoming centuries-old inertia of Chinese, Indian to make sports a viable career.
Look at India, d second most populated country in d world, but one which also has d worst Olympic medals to population ratio to date.
At least d Chinese r doing much better in dat respect ā though I suspect its more for national pride rather than pure luv of sports for its own sake.
Just like many African-Americans in American football, basketball, boxing etc who ride on sports to get out of poverty, many of d Chinese world class athletes r plucked fr relatively abject backgrounds n groomed fr young. Its their ticket to success.

Surprised how small some of the sprinters are (vs Bolt)!!
Disappointed that Lee Chong Wei just couldn't outsmart LD at the end...so close!!

Singapore can carve a niche as a regional sports venues -- it's trying anyway -- with F1 and the Youth Olympic Games (2010), and some regional professional golf tournaments. It could develop further, I think. China's government has a system in place much like the old Soviet Union, to specifically develop world class athletes. It is my understanding that promising talent is often hand-picked by officials for further development (when I was in the US, I worked with a woman from Shanghai who was selected in such a program). India doesn't produce much Olympic medal success...cricket is the big sport there and that doesn't lend itself to the format very well, unless they play abbreviated matches. Olympics boxing: Japan win appeal after controversial loss

Japan have won an appeal after Satoshi Shimizu's controversial bantamweight defeat by Magomed Abdulhamidov, of Azerbaijan.
Shimizu has been declared the winner and goes forward to the quarter-finals.
He trailed 12-5 going into the final round but on five occasions he knocked down his opponent, who also received a two-point penalty.
However, judges scored the round 12-10 to Shimizu, which was not enough to stop Abdulhamidov claiming the win.
Referee Ishanguly Meretnyyazov, from Turkmenistan, has been expelled the International Boxing Association (AIBA) said.
The AIBA said the contest should have been stopped.
\"I was shocked by the final scores. He fell down so many times,\" Shimizu said.
\"Why didn't I win? I don't understand.\"
No extra points are awarded for knockdowns but the verdict was still greeted with boos at London's ExCeL Arena.
Japanese officials marched to the competition office with the 500 US dollars needed to lodge an appeal.
Shimizu added: \"I did do my best. I performed really well. England is the place of boxing and the spectators supported me so well so I am very pleased about that.
\"This is a very memorable moment. I don't understand why the judgement went against me so I don't know how to improve.\"
There was more controversy in the heavyweight section when Iran's Ali Mazaheri was disqualified in the second round of his fight against Cuba's Jose Larduet Gomez after receiving three warnings for holding within a minute.
Mazaheri said: \"I have never seen such a thing in the world. I could have won the bout but I had three warnings in a minute. I was not doing anything wrong.\"
