Actually, RL has 3 top classes too. But we tend to hear people commenting that sch ONLY focus on 1 top class. Maybe some truth (as in top class gets a little more worksheet? ) but IMO, prob many many Schs are doing the same, or I could be wrong. Previously, believe RL did churn out students with > 270 for a few years.....but last year's top scorer was a first time. Dun think will happen that often
Frankly, think all these do come with a tradeoff .... typically, the stress level is higher and workload heavier at schools that can churn.
RL also focuses a lot on the top class (ONLY). In 2010, 3/4 of the top class (29 out of 40) obtained 260 and above when the average T score was nothing close to the average T score of top schools. I will feel upset as a parent if my child is not in the top class in RL. In my dd and ds schools now, there are more than one top class.
Frankly I am curious how NYPS achieve this feat of producing > 200 students with T-score >250. (40% of cohort). RL seems to have gain so much 'publicity' over their workload but yet only has ~65 students scoring > 250. DS Sch despite getting comments from parents that Sch only focus on 1st class, only churn 5-8 students yearly with t-score >250. T-score in top class varies from 18x - 26x. -

NYPS has 4 GEP classes which is about 100 pupils already, with the remaining 100 pupils from 10 mainstream classes, this figure easily make up the >200 pupils scoring >250 T-score. -

A few years ago, there was one from Sengkang Primary School. Another neighbourhood school. It currently also focus a lot of it's top class (top 20 students in the cohort) & hoping to produce another top national scorer. I believe that some of mainstream kids actually qualified for GEP but they choose to remain in the mainstream. These kids tend to produce better results in PSLE. Another reason is that GEP Programme is very different from the mainstream. GEP kids are not drilled for PSLE. Most of the them get into top schools through Academic DSA. However, top schools offer GEP tend to produce better PSLE results & more top scorers than neighbourhood schools.ruohoo97:

But seriously, think it's more like a one-off / once-in-a-blue moon kinda case.
Compare to the top schools, think the average cohort is still some distance away....but for a neighborhood school, a good progress and doing well

[/quote]The school will work hard to try to maintain it's reputation after producing a national top scorer. It will also become more popular in its neighbourhood. Can't compare its average cohort performance with top schools. Top schools can depend on their top students from GEP classes to push up it's overall performance. We have to make fair comparison, only compare their mainstream performance.

NYPS produces 120 of them from the mainstream (out of 320) + another 80 of them from the GEP to make up the 200 students with T score of 250 & above. Most of it’s kids come from well to do families. They go to branded enrichment schools such as learning lab, which most of the neighbourhood schools’ kids could not afford.

DD school only concentrate on the top 20 people in the top class.(whole class: 40 people) Extra enrichment courses and assessments(tailor-made by teachers) were given. Although there were students from other class perform better, no extra enrichment courses was given to them. I think the school really wants a better results this year as compare to the previous years. None of the students scored >/270. I felt very bad for the rest of the 20 students in the top class. As for my DD, who is in the 3rd class, the school had given up on her(them). I have to look for other sources to improve her academic results. :stupid:

I am sorry but I cannot bring myself to tell any of my children that the grades they attained is in \"The End of the World\" category. I believe the grading system, though not perfect, simply points to the fact that some children need to be taught in another environment, or at a different pace.mummy so kiasu:

My friend struggled with his DS's low PSLE grades a few years ago. The boy is now thriving and doing well in ITE, studying Food Tech. He picked up music and cooking, achieved a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, made a lot of decent friends. Yes, it felt like the end of the world for the parents for a
while. Especially if the parents are graduates or are sensitve to remarks made by friends and relatives. Or those of us who believe our kids need to be doctors, lawyers, CEOs or CFOs and if not we have failed as parents.
No label the education system slaps on my children will make me think it is the end of the world. We simply change course and make lemonade out of
lemons.
(P/S: My wife met someone who suffered the double tragedy of have 2 (out
of 3) children dying while studying abroad. Now that is end of the world for me. I don't think I can take that well. )[/quote]I agree with you. Every kid is special. All kids have different abilities & strength. Some kids might not be good in studies but have talents in other area. Parents have to help these kids to identify their talents & build on them. Maybe they are the next Olympic swimmer or award winning chef. :celebrate: -
