China in now what the old Soviet Union used to be in terms of world sports, especially the Olympics. Like the old Soviet Union, it has a government-sponsored training program and hand picks promising athletes for world-class development. In post-Soviet Russia, however, that program has disintegrated so they are only a shadow of what they once were. In the USA, there is no government-driven program at all...every sport operates rather independently and sets its own criteria regarding who makes the team or not.

In your opinion, what do you think Singapore could do to get there?

Singapore seems to be reasonable competitive at the Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games...so athletic success isn't completely alien or new-found here. I think it just needs to \"raises its own bar\" of quality in the areas where it has achieved success in those regional \"subsets of the Olympics\". If tiny Grenada and impoverished Dominican Republic can score golds (as they did this year in London), I am pretty confident that Singapore can do it too...in the reasonably near future.

If countries with smaller pop can do it with much lesser or no monetary incentives,
inferior infrastructure n sometimes no proper coaching, why can't we when we r better/hv more in all these aspects?

advanced amenities hinder progress and development in this sense

the kenyan and jamaican ran without shoes for their life, hence their record breaking is just a normal way of life in survival in day to day living

if the kids can walk 2hours each way to / from school in the outbacks of china, sure they will become good runners by singapore standard anytine
