MOE Relooking P1 registration - Too much priority to alumni

All policies should be reviewed regularly. I am not against a change. A cap at phase 2A is highly probable, not sure if that is considered a major overhaul. But a total elimination of phase 2A is not likely. But first, those policy makers at the top, who are benefitting from phase 2A, must agree to change the policy first.

Home school distance is highlighted as one of the important objectives of the current P1 registration system but we understand the authority and many in this thread also fully recognize contributions from alumni.

IMHO, a cap for P2A, perhaps not an overhaul, is one of the best probable solution now to enable the system to continue to serve both original objectives of the system.

So when it comes to Sec school, distance is not a problem for them - they know how to manage their time and can study or read on the train.

We do have a fairly popular school within 1km (5 mins walk) but why should we take the risk when we can get a confirmed place in my alma mater and their overall CCA + academic offering is better???

There would be lesser carbon emission..

My kids in P1 & P2 takes bus to school themselves. My caregiver just need to bring them to the bus stop and to fetch them from the bus stop. And, there are occasions where the P1 kid goes to school solo when the P2 kid got CCA to attend.

The school is within 1km thou. Hence, I always appreciate a nearby school. If I fetch them myself, we will walk if weather permits.

It's too high a risk one would take not t register at own alma mater for guaranteed placement. Registering at a popular school nearby and risk being ballot out. Not many ppl would take this risk....

How many bus stop to reach your kids's school? I :salute: you. When I tell my friends I'll let my boy take bus home by himself in P5, they all doubt me.
It makes no sense to take school bus and tour around the whole estate for an hour. Better to take public bus...or parents fetch.

I value the time on the journey to school... That short time is valuable quality time, can impart the right values to children on the way.

But the main debate of the thread would be on whether such a choice should have existed in the first place.

Within 1km.. 2 bus stops only.

And yes, you're right about the school bus. When the elder kid is in P1, we use the school bus, and it toured around the estate.

The biggest motivation is $$ savings.. and not having to pay for school holidays and days with CCA.. which we need to source for own transport even if we subscribe to the sch bus.

And, they actually could leave for school later and reach home earlier then using school bus.

Yes.. on those occasions when I could fetch them.. the journey is quite enjoyable too..

Many parent prepare fruits as snacks and let their kids munch on the way..

Sometimes we see pple do something which looks like good idea and we copy.. :evil:

I maybe planning to get them a bike so that they could learn to ride and maybe not so tiring compared to walking..

For my case, I benefited from P2A. It was a easy way out. I didn't have to PV and was guaranteed a place. If I had chosen to go for a school within walking distance to my home, I would be at risk of being ballot out at P2C.

I was just lucky to have a alma mater of good reputation. But more than 30 years ago, my school face dwindling enrolment that they have to relocate into HDB estate. My mum registered me there because it was walking distance to my home then. When I graduated from the school, it wasn't very famous yet.

Personally I feel the alma mater phase shouldn't be scrapped totally. Who knows in 30 years time, our neighbourhood school may have became a super hot school by then. If P2A still stands, then it's great for parents who used to study at so-so school of yesterday and able to enjoy the benefit of priority enrolment to a good school.
Since MOE has stated all schools are good schools, it may happen 30 years later all schools are really good schools.

Anyway how many people are blessed enough to still within 1 km of their Alma mater...these are another set of problems, rising housing cost, lak of housing in mature estate....etc

With 90 schools having to ballot, not many would dare take the risk to register elsewhere if they are old boy/girl of a school still around. Being balloted out at 2C means they would have to go to 2C supp.
