      Scary:
      spikey:

Based on last year's PSLE results, it is interesting that MGS' Chinese standard is higher than most, if not all, the SAP schools.

Agree. I know of a few friends' whose DDs in MGS/SCGS/NY and they started Chinese tuition since kindy and paid $50/hr. I would say not many parents can afford esp since it's only kindy level. Many SAP schools are situated in HDB estates and looking at the background of the kids (within 1km), there is no way they can attend tuitions and enrichments like most kids in the BT and Novena area. I know of a child in DS's school whose parents spend ard $2,000/mth on Chinese tuitions alone. :yikes:

For SAP schools, the teachers have higher expectations for Chinese, but whether the kids can meet the expectations, it's a different story.

      :faint:

Consideration should also be given to the Chinese syllabus and the teachers in MGS.

Teachers, yes. But syllabus hmmm, doesn't Mgs use the same text books as many others? :? Anyway, they will all sit for the same exam papers eventually.

I find the Chinese standard in many lower primary kids far more higher than their seniors even in schools like Acsp.

I have heard from many friends and strangers that the Chinese standard in Acsp sucks. But I find for the current lower primary levels in Acsp, their Chinese is quite good. Checked with a few Chinese teachers and yes it is getting better due to early Chinese enrichment n parents are more willing to speak Chinese to the kids.

Taking HCL depends on the child. It’s not easy. My son and I struggled when he was in P1…higher Chinese assessment books and standard is higher than normal Chinese. Even when he dropped HCL in P5, normal Chinese was not that much easier as it was new format.

A friend of mine registered her 2 girls in MGS as she is an old girl…but had a headache registering for youngest child - a boy. Couldn’t get into Pei Hwa or Bukit Panjang…in the end, went to one school in Bukit batok area. She wanted school with affiliation but there are no schools around her place in hill view.

Yes I heard many of DS’s schoolmates got balloted out of Pei Hwa. Anyone recall what was the ratio?

I also don't know what happened. A fren of mine was balloted out and heard her friends were balloted out too. Thought the odds were not that bad, 39 vying for 27 vacancies.

I think teachers play an important role. Really Thank God that DS has a VERY good and committed Chinese teacher. So far, DS still ok. Of course, I have to coach him too, especially his Show and Tell.

My husband totally opposite from many parents. He doesn't want DS to use DSA or affiliation. Want him to choose what he wants based on interest and academic performance. Maybe he will change his mind after seeing all the struggles in upper primary.

Or perhaps we have common friends.........

My son isn’t good in sports…studies wise, not possible to use DSA.

Even if using sports or other activity, the results cannot be that poor either. If my child gets into the school using DSA, I am concerned whether she/he has time to study if it is compulsory to participate in this and that competition. Worse still, if have to go overseas. Sec school is no joke and with more subjects to handle. There is Literature, chemistry and physics…etc. I better not think of sec school yet…just get PSLE over and done with first.
