What is Cut Off Point (COP) and what does it mean?

Can I ask what is Cut Off Points (COP) and what does it say about the school?

I am a Newbie to this and need to know more.

The cut-off points is the minimum T-score determined by the secondary schools to admit a child into the school and it varies slightly from year to year depending on the intake's demand and supply. In KSP, there has been a compiled list of the previous years' COP for parents to review the trend and determine if they should attempt to apply to those sec schools.


Typically, people will try not to apply to schools with the exact cut off points based on past years' record as it risks being pushed out since COP varies from year to year. The COP of the year is only released after the S1 posting, only then will the school know what is the exact cut-off point they admit a student for that year.

After the COP is out, for appeal cases, it can be reviewed against the actual COP of the year to determine the chance for appeal.

What does it say about the school? It tells the kind of profile of students with their PSLE results who are admitted to the school. It is only an indication as everyone starts again on a clean slate from Sec 1 and a high T-score does not guarantee high results in Sec 1... \"Better\" is a relative term and it is different things to different people. A more appropriate term would be higher COP means a more popular-choice school. If more students want to get into a school of their choice, naturally the school will have a wider choice of kids to choose from and will rank them according to their T-score and take in the better T-scores kids.

You should look at the banding to identify the better schools, except for IP schools. Banding is just like your kid's subject grading in school. It tells you their students O level performance. You will notice that top schools are band 1 schools and IP schools. SAP schools are band 1 and band 2 schools.

Any Sec Schools you have in mind that u wish to know their Banding? Maybe Kiasu parents will know.
Banding starts from Band 1-9.
Band 1 is the best, follow by Band 2 and so on....

Hi crester, thanks for the offer and suggestion! My child is still very young. I heard of this banding system but am curious to know more. No particular school in mind really. Just wondering how this banding comes about, what is the guideline/basis of grouping the schools in the same band, where to find out which school is in which band etc. General information...

During your child's year, you will have to refer to the latest banding in this similar \"big book\" for that year's S1 posting.
