      When 3/8 of a container was filled with sugar, it weighed 20kg. Mrs Tan poured another 6 kg of sugar into the container and it became half full. Find the mass of the container when it was empty?

      Can somebody explain how to solve this..... :sad:

      3/8 container filled with sugar = 20kg

      1/8+3/8 = 1/2 full container

      1/8 = 6kg (sugar)

      3/8 = 3x6kg = 18kg (weight of sugar only)

      Therefore, weight of container = 20kg - 18kg = 2kg

      :thankyou:

        Jamesbond, my answer is $33.20 but i’m still learning the maths and I did it a different way. Let me try ur way…

        …Alamak, error in calculation. Yes, now i get $33.60.

        My method
        $99.70 - 63.90 = 35.80 (value of X)
        69.40-35.80 =33.60

          X, Y & Z have $99.70. X & Y have $69.4. Z& Y have $63.90. how much does Y have?

          Hi

          $69.40 + $63.90 = $133.30

          $133.30 - $99.70 = $33.60

          Y = $33.60.

          thks!

            A train was 2/5 full of passengers. At the first station, 1/2 of the passengers alighted and 17 people boarded the train. The train is now 1/4 full. How many passengers were there on the train at first?

            Pl explain me how to solve this…

              Tan painted 1/4 of a pole red and 1 2/3 m of the pole blue. The rest of the pole was not painted. If the pole is 6m long, what was the length of the pole that was not painted?

              Pl help…

                Length of pole = 6m

                1/4 of 6m = 1.5m

                (1.5+1 2/3)m = 3 1/6m painted

                6- 3 1/6m = 2 5/6m not painted

                  Hi, need help for the following:

                  1) Jack is 50 years older than Alice. In 20 years’ time, he will be twice as old as her. What is Alice’s age now?

                  2)Jeffrey had $60 more than Patsy. When he gave $8 to her, he had twice as much money as she. How much money did Jeffrey have at first?

                  TIA

                    TIA
                    1) 50 + 20 = 70
                    70 + 20 = 90
                    90/3 = 30
                    30-20 = 10 Yrs old...

                    2) 8*2 = 16
                    60 - 16 = 44
                    44*2 = 88
                    88 + 8 = 96...So $96 Jeffrey had at first...

                    Pl correct me if I am wrong...

                        This is how I solve it:
                        After 1/2 left, left with 1/5 full.
                        1/5 full + 17 =1/4 full

                        ¼ full – 1/5 full =17
                        5/20 full - 4/20 full = 17
                        1/20 full = 17
                        Full \t= 17*2
                        \t= 340
                        At first, no. of passengers \t= 2/5 * 340
                        \t\t\t\t=136
                        (P4 can solve it this way at this step,
                        5U=340
                        1u=68
                        2u=136)

                        Is the answer correct?
                        Hope it is and useful.

                        Regards,
                        Xiaohu.
