I grew up drinking milk made from condensed milk + hot water. My mum tried to get me the better brand condensed milk and even that was hard to come by.

I remembered back then there were brands such as blue cross, lady general etc. The condensed milk was used to feed babies and adults (for the coffee)
        alike.

Lady general still have. But I don't find blue cross around anymore...

THE standard is the Milkmaid, by Nestle 红子牛奶

last century the cover of the can is printed paper, and the underside of the paper cover usually has pictures of birds....each can is different....the target is to get the complete series of the birds...

sometimes the kid were eager to collect all the pictures and peel them all off the Milkmaid can even before they are opened .... and the unopened cans were mixed up with other cans with paper cover ripped off ..... and parents had a hard time deciding which can is milk and which can is other food ........

          those were the days ......

I used to sneak into the kitchen secretly and take it neat   but

BTW, I used to frequent the prata shop opposite Worskel Road some few years back and was introduced to condensed milk prata with fish curry. Waaaaaaaah, the combination of sweet and savory (must be fish curry though) is just soooooo good

Don't know if it still serves condensed milk prata ....

Just saw on C N A that VB says he is shocked tt a family feeds the children with condensed milk and water.

I grew up on that. Price of milk powder has tripled over the decade. Has our salary tripled? Even condensed milk is not cheap.

Shocking? Or rather awakening :yikes: :lightrod:
VB is shocked because he has never drink it before. I guess he will be more shocked if he live with the poor now.

Long time ago, condensed milk was considered a luxury. Not food for the poor! We were not allowed to take too much, and we took turns to lick the spoon clean. Before throwing away the emptied tin, we would make the last cup of milo or kopi in the tin.

my mother fed me with that too in a glass bottle (RC cola I think) because could not afford to buy a proper milk bottle

but we were all so happy, carefree and healthy :rahrah:
