It's just that the statement lky's \"always right\" just doesn't sit well with me.

Yea, dat's wat I took issue with too.
      Lilac66:

The graduate mothersโ€™ scheme in the 1980s, which gave priority in school registration to children of graduate mothers, over non-graduate mothers was deemed discriminatory at that time. It assumes that graduate mothers would produce more intelligent kids who will benefit the economy. Glad it was scrapped.
      ๐Ÿ˜„
d Graduate Mothers Scheme was implemented in 1984 to reverse a trend of more educated citizens not reproducing enuf,
n when some controversial portions of dat policy was scrapped in 1985,
it was replaced by another policy with d same objective but rolled out as โ€œthree or more, if u can afford itโ€™.
to promote birth rate among d better educated n better-off segments of d population.
So it is not an entirely new problem, d gahmen has been at it, call it social engineering if u will, for more than 30 years with no solution in sight.
It was much easier to implement n enforce discentives to discourage d populace to stop at two
than to encourage d citizens to procreate profusely coz while d gahmen can dispense or withhold d tangibles at will,
it cannot yet influence d intangibles without affecting d economic policies it currently pursues.

At least the subsequent policies were more palatable and less controversial. \"Have 3 or more if you can afford it \" is more inclusive than \"Have more if you're a graduate mum\".

Also kudos to Tony Tan for speaking up against this policy at that time.

              Well said !! :goodpost:
But ... ... ROI is the measure of success by our govt. this applies even in the making of babies unfortunately.
The reward parent gets from parenting is indeed priceless but the price to parent in Singapore is simply overly high !

"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

I am simply aghast when I read the blame being laid at the gโ€™ments feet for what is essentially a personal decision.

"Price to parent in Singapore is simply overly high!"

                Seriously??

                Whoโ€™s the one measuring ROI?
