I said yes and asked why, that is when they said they have parents who are upset that they are taking their time to teach numbers up to 20 and their DC are already progressing to numbers up to 100 :faint: :faint:

So what? DD has progressed up to... 10,500,000. :siam: That's how much I have to pay her when I land on one of DD's hotels. Good thing I swiped all the dark blue plots.

We used to have parents who were against projects and want us to make the children do repetitive writing and sums. To them they do not see the discussions going into the project work, the ideas that the children come up with and the research that they do in centre and assume that it is a lot of cutting from magazines and printing from the internet. It took us a few projects before the parents were sold to the idea that children do learn a lot, even more then the usual teacher talk children listen followed by worksheet method. The kids were keen to find out more information on the project topic and remember them better as they were involved in the process of fact finding.

I never had to teach either of my own kids how to search for info on the internet nor how to put together a simple presentation using ppt. They picked up all these skills during their project work. They learned mindmapping and concept webs which they apply to their current work, especially in compo/journal writing and even show & tells.

When we started doing show & tell with the kids 3 years ago, most parents could not be bothered to let their children participate. They were again more concerned about when we will be starting spelling & HYPY with their children. Now we have parents who fully prepare their kids and drill their kids for S&T and get totally hung up about whether the child was able to speak and if what they said was relevant. We have to keep telling parents the activity is to build the child's confidence, not about delivering a perfectly rehearsed piece written by mum/dad. And we totally enjoy the impromtu nuggets of information that the children will blurt out during such sessions that give us a whole lot of insight into their family.

As for spelling and tingxie, we have 3 camps, the ok ones, the ones who think that we are starting too late and the words to easy and the ones who feel that there should not be any spelling or tingxie at all.

And yes there is also the contention about doing numbers up to 20 is too little. My reply to them is always this. If your child can grasp the number concepts of 0-20 and grasp them well, 21-99 will be a breeze for them. And for preschoolers, there really is no need for us to touch 100 and beyond but again, once the concept of the ones and tens are taught well, they will be able to apply the concept to numbers beyond. So you want rote learning or strong foundation?
