Try playing the "game of life". In it you take out a study loan of $100 000 to go through college, which you then pay back with interest once you have started earning money. You pay your taxes, pay bills, have children, buy a starter house, change it for another house later, retire … And count your money to see who wins. DC counted everyone’s "retirement account" to make sure none of us cheated …

Fight during games or after they lost the games?

Eer Before, during and after?? Usually they cant complete the game. Minor disputes: fight over tokens, who's going to be the banker. Major disputes: they make their own private rules and then disagree over the implementation, they broker special deals ie I get Utilities ok? You get Boardwalk, then cry foul when it didn't suit their needs. Only my DH can arbitrate patiently. I was so tempted to burn the games.

        😂 Soooo familiar.

If I am zen that day, all these do not unfaze me at all. I will tell them sort it out yourselves and leave them be. If I am wound up that day, the game will end up in cold storage and they will each be in their rooms for some quiet time away from each other.
I'm cool... :imcool:

I just thought need parental presence when kid is doing homework... Sometimes need my help, sometimes dun need (then I can surf KSP 😆 )
                Call that bonding?
                Or paranoid?
                😆

daddy d, maybe you are not hawking over your kid? Just establishing a presence \" like hey, let me know if you need me ok?\"

                maybe a man-thing
As long as i can be paged , means I am working even if I never got paged
Hmmm., then the one at my home must be programmed differently. He hardly bothers with our child's school work! He is more into hands on learning rather than paper work.

DD1 is in K2 and starting P1 in a girls’ sch come January. I am a FTWM and quite relaxed with DD1 and DD2 (K1).

They do not go to any type of enrichments/tuition. Mainly that is because I am very lazy (!) and I also want them to enjoy their childhood. I just cannot imagine spending so much $ on enrichment and spending my rest days dashing around like a mad woman.
DH says they dun have to learn so much. Both of us have never attended tuition in our lives. I come from a so-called elite girls’ sch and he came from a neighbourhood sch but I feel he is much more knowledgeable than me! After I met him, I think elite sch may not be so elite afterall hahaha!

Sure I get anxious when I hear about what other kids do for enrichment, but I simply refuse to start them on enrichment lessons now. It’s like a cycle. I feel anxious, then the feeling passes. Then I surf KSP and start feeling anxious again lol.

On weekdays when I reach home they will be watching cartoons on TV or having dinner, but usually watching TV! After my dinner I will chat/play with them but I always have some me-time reading, surfing the net, watching TV etc.

Then an hour before bedtime or so we would be reading bedtime stories for about 30 min before they go to bed. They would take some time to wind down in their shared bedroom before they fall asleep.

Weekends DD1 has ballet in the am and they both go for gym class in the evening. On Sundays they do their homework and we would go swimming, blading, cycling, shopping, library etc for the rest of the day.

DD1 can read but she is not advanced in any way. Her hw consists of Chinese writing, Chinese zhao jv and English "essay". I noticed not much Maths hw. She would need help with Chinese zhao jv (typically 5 qns) cos she won’t know how to write certain words. Same for English essay. For e.g. her essay could be "Write 5 sentences about Singapore". She would need help to organise her thoughts and spell certain words.

I feel that our parenting style is v relaxed and I am trying to be an ostrich for now! Looking fwd to seeing whether I can still be so laid back when DD1 starts P1!

I am quite like you too, my gals are quite relaxed too. No tuition except Chinese (I can’t teach Chinese, ok I know, bad excuse!). They do, however, go for non-academic enrichments on the weekends.

My eldest is in P2, so far so good when she transitioned from K2 to P1. No major issues. I don’t intend to do anything different to my gals for next year P1. Like you, I would often be paranoid when I read updates on what parents in KSP do but I guess the comparison is often limitless, just be happy with your child’s progress and space to play/learn. I reckon my gals don’t need to top the class or school, just decent enough to get by and enough space to grow/play would suffice for me and my hubby.

                      Hi 2hotTOhandle,

I’m surprise your DD1 has a fair bit of hw to do in K2. Mine also K2, next yr P1 but her childcare doesn’t give her any hw. This semester, they just started on ting xie & spelling (5 words weekly). No essay writing at all so my DD is very relaxed on weekdays…watch tv & korean drama, play games on ipad, go playground & cycling etc. On weekends, she goes for piano & abacus. Comparatively, my friends’ children have more hectic schedules…swimming, drawing, ballet, language courses & the list goes on.

Yes, Imp 75 is right. Don’t compare or it makes me nervous sometimes. Easier said than done though.

I just hope the new stat board will make pre-school education compulsory. Plus for curriculum to set a base std for literacy, not just Eng, numeracy, science and life skills.

I think to a certain extent, it’s important for parents to know the syllabus for primary education and look through the PSLE papers and decide what’s needed or not needed for your child, taking into account the child’s abilities.
