Thanks for the reassurance. Sure hope the same goes for my son![/quote]You are welcome..
I have never arranged any tuition for my boys but seeing his Chinese standard :slapshead: .. so I started Chinese tuition for him in Sec 3, believed that help as well.
My second boy received CO for his DSA from MSHS last week.. now gonna \"restart\" the journey of secondary years with him again.. I hope he can do better, if not as well as his brother.

Dear TempTemp, QLL and other parents,
I am trying to position my P4 ds for DSA in MSHS via band CCA in 2 years time. Anyone with experience in this????
Can you pls share the DSA process? I think for band they have auditions. Besides audition, are there any other interviews/ requirements? Just wondering what to expect. Is there a minimum P5/P6 scores that is required by MSHS??? I don't see that in the website but are there any \"unwritten\" requirements that you maybe aware of?
Greatly appreciate if you could just share your general DSA experience with MSHS. That would help. Thanks! -

Hi MMM
My son DSA via badminton. Not too sure if there is an academic requirement but he is averaging at 80% for P4 and P5. Yes they do consider the P6 SA1 result and CO is subject to passing as express student for PSLE
Badminton DSA was tough- it was round robin for about 4 hours. There were about 40 DSA students and a knocked out system till the final 12. We were told that MSHS would offer to 7 students for badminton. I had been to a few schools for DSA, MSHS was one of the thoughest!
Sorry, can't help much with the band; my nephew graduated yr 2011 with good 'O' level score. He was from the band, I understand this CCA took up quite a fair bit of his time but he enjoyed it. He took it as his CCA and not via DSA but it did help him with his admission to a good JC though as the band won quite a few awards. -

Thanks so much for sharing. Did he have to go through any face to face interviews with teachers/ principal, etc...?
Actually, I am also planning for DSA for my P5 dd. TKGS is one of the targetted schools and they specified overall 70% in their form. However, in MSHS, nothing was written. I am trying to drive him to work hard towards a MSHS DSA. I can't tell his standard for now as P5 is another big jump as seen in my dd's case. But I told him that he must be at least meet the TKGS standard. If his results is poor, no point thinking about band or DSA.... as the minimum score is eligibility to be in express stream.
Yes band is always very time consuming especially near competition/ performance. But I rather he spend time in the band than idling in Nex
It's always good for kids to have a passion. At this moment, he does 1.5 days of band per week as he is into some other MOE program as well. Alot of his seniors went to MSHS. His pri school has a very good band and he has the passion. So MSHS appears to be the perfect place for him to pursue his passion since he heard good feedback from his seniors and MSHS also has a very good band too. Trying to work towards that and hopefully he make it in 2 years time. :xedfingers:
BTW, do you know if most of the primary boys from Marists ended up in MSHS? As in no/ very low COP for them? Are there any normal stream in Marists? I raised this as was just reading about bullying cases in the primary section. I always see the MSHS boys in Nex and they seem well behaved so just trying to gauge the behavioural aspect. -
Hi QLL,
Just checked my email, so far nothing received from MSHSβ¦ I did email the in-charge on Wed and was told he will email out ASAP. The tea session has been changed to 14/9 instead of PSLEβs eve he initially told me on phone.

MMM, donβt be so disturbed with you read about the bullying cases from the MSHS Pr thread. My ds is in P3 at MSHS & I go to school on & off & let me assure you that the boys are generally well behaved. I am still glad that we put son at MSHS & not other boys school. We share among the moms & friends from other boys/girls schools & mixed schools also have their fair share of such cases, itβs the generation.
More importantly, we impart good family values to our children, tell them that these are not acceptable behaviour & the implications when they grow up. We also arm them with skills how to deal with these kids & what they should do. Itβs part of survival skills. I hope I make sense to you. If you still feel unease, maybe you can write in to the P & share how keen you are in getting your ds into MSHS but you are disturbed with you read & ask for their assurance? -

HI MMM
There was no interview for DSA sport.
If your DS has passion in band, encourage him to try for MSHS. As long as he is discipline and has good attitude, he should be successful there. I saw the band's performance at the Botanical Garden and Esplanade, was indeed impressed by their performances.
My eldest son is in MSHS now. He was from a methodist primary school and had abit of a culture shock initially as MS is a SAP school. He is getting along fine now but boy being boy, needs kicking at times. Attitude is the most important for one to do well eventually.
I understand the COP for MS primary is lower to join MSHS, around 225. Correct me if I'm wrong, 225 should be slightly higher than average score for most primary schools. There were quite a few from the MS primary school when my son was in Sec one. Generally the school discipline is strict and I think the boys are rather well behaved within. Junction 8 used to be their favourite \" playground\" but with the opening of NEx which is one or two stations from Bartley circle line, it's not surprising to see a whole bunch there for lunch.
I see that the overally passing for 'O' level is high where almost 99% of the student getting into JC and Poly. Hopefully my son will be as successful; I won't worry much about the school's discipline as the discipline master is strict and will not hesitate to give a \"whip\" when the boys are not behaving. MSHS only accept students eligible for express stream. Hope this will help in your decision making. -
Hi Honey,
Thanks for sharing. My ds's current class is packed with mischievous boys.it is a mixed school. In fact just last week, one boy \" punched\" the other. Ds is a monitor and he told us they tried to break the fight and even stand in as a witness. He is a class mtr. I share the same view as you. As parents, we will guide them on appropriate behavior and if they are caught in some situation, how should he handle. However, not everyone come from the same family background so we cannot expect everyone to hold the same values. But the ft, level mgr and principal was involved so from their actions, they are very concerned for kids concerned. This is a consolation/ assurance for parents. In fact the naughty ones have to visit the principal during recess for a period of time.
Hi QLL,
Thanks so much for the information. It is indeed very helpful.
I suppose the first barrier my ds has to overcome is the religion as he is from a buddhist SAP school...but I also did that when I moved to a convent sec school
some initial culture shock but it allows me to appreciate different religion. My dh is saints from primary to secondary... But we are both free thinkers.
Yes, an excellent band can does wonder. This is the first year I experienced it when they did their SYF. We were literally blown away....he is very passionate about his instrument. Ds and I felt MSHS seems to be just perfect as it is near our place too. Really hope he works hard.
It is also good that they have a decent COP for affiliation. If the schools just accept everyone it is usually difficult to build that standard for o levels. So I rather they are more selective of their own affiliated kids.
Looks good and thanks so much for sharing. It gives me a feel of what to expect for DSA. Hopefully we will be the lucky ones in 2014.
In the meantime, try to keep this thread alive. It is useful for existing and prospective parents. -
