A good friend of mine, a doctor who works in the A & E Dept, does not tell her patients the percentages of successful or unsuccessful cases for the different types of presentations she encounters in the course of her work; although she knows the studies that have been published with the relevant statistics. She has always argued that what’s the use of knowing the statistics if the patient happens to fall info the unfortunate minority group?
Similarly, what is the use of knowing the percentages of quality passes if your child falls into the unfortunate group that does not achieve quality passes? Perhaps for that year, a greater fraction of the students were going for expensive tuition & enrichments, which then translated to a higher percentage of quality passes. Or maybe a really strict teacher, who is then transferred out before your child gets to P6 … or …
My point being, please do not look at academic achievements alone. Consider if the school culture is one that your child will enjoy and thrive in. -

Good Post, Laura ! agree with you - parents do not just look at academic grades alone. Some schools thrive on Holistic education. Parents still look at the overall picture.
but then, back to reality.
Your daughter is in SCGS, so in a way you are blessed.
SCGS primary school girls are blessed to enter SCGS Sec O level track - at an affliated COP, 220 (as of today).
But hor, don't forget outsiders keen to enter SCGS Sec - even for the same O level track need to meet minimal 25x. How much difference ? 30 over points, between SCGS affliated pupils and outsiders. Now, that's a lot, a lot ! One point is already so hard to achieve, let alone talk about ... 30 over points.
so again, back to reality where great competition thrive.... we parents whose children are not so blessed to have a ready, affliated Sec school as a safety net to catch the kids. So, harsh reality circumstances forcing us back to look at .... academic grades. Like it or not, an outsider child must acquire basic minimal 25x, before can consider joining Sec. An outsider child must work very hard, before can score minimal 25x. The facts are before us. If IP, then every child on common ground, equal footing. Because :- no discount given to even affliated SCGS pupils. -
Thanks, phtthp!
Yes, my dd is blessed, but there are two sides to every coin.
What if she fails to even make the 220 CO for SCGS Sec?
But worse, what if she continues to do well academically. Why worse? Because everyone meets failure/ rejection in their life, be they ever so smart, rich, blessed, etc. Everyone has their share of good and bad dolled out to them by life/ God/ the Fates, etc. What we all need to learn is how to recover from any set back we may face in life; and the sooner we learn, the easier it gets to recover from every subsequent set back. Some people may feel that they are especially unlucky, always facing the same type of problems, but perhaps it’s because their response is always the same, equally negative, never learning to turn a set back into sometime more positive.
I speak from my own experiences.
I do not think I could set out to make my dd feel the pain of failure/ rejection, but I can and do try to let dd stand on her feet, to not be over protective, to seek out challenges and to hug her and encourage her where she fails. -
sglady:
most likely transferred to a pri school with affiliation to sec school, not because the school pressured them to leaveNo worries. It's not SCGS.
It's RGPS. Like i've mentioned it's just a hearsay or maybe my friend doesn't really relate the full details to me. I believe every teacher's approach to each individual child is different too.
some transferred to SMPS or MGS so that it is easier to get into MGS (secondary) or SMSS...... -
