chs openly solicits teachers' day presents from parents

In my opinion, it's not a big deal at all. Don't want to give, then don't give. Not compulsory, not obligated. Can ignore. My two ds are in the sch, and when I receive such notices from the PSG, it's entirely up to me to give or not. What's there to complain?
Exactly!
By the way, I never received any letter this year for this, altho' when the boys were in primary school, I've seen it. -
It really depends on how one sees this issue. There are always two sides to everything.
If the Management Committee, PSG and Alumni Association make an effort to organise a party or D&D to thank the teachers, this is a good culture to show appreciation to the teachers. The organisers put in time, efforts and money to organise the event. It is not too much for them to ask the other parents/alumni to chip in. Like some parents have said, if you want, chip in, if not, just ignore the letter.
Some schools are already doing this. The PSG and Alumni Association will ask the teachers what do they want for Teachers’ Day celebration. Then the PSG and Alumni Association will raise funds (or ask for donated gifts) to make it happen for the teachers. I see this as a good culture as it is their way to show their appreciations to the teachers.
Schools and teachers will NOT ask for gifts openly. But seriously, anyone bothers to find out what the teachers really want for Teachers’ Day celebration?
I know the PSG and Alumni Associations of some popular schools have gone to great extent to celebrate Teachers’ Day and grant the teachers their wishes. One may ask is there a need to go to such extent. But if the teachers deserve it, the students are happy in schools, the schools are producing the desired results, parents like these schools and these schools becoming more and more popular years after years, why not?
There is really nothing wrong to have corporate practices like D&D in schools. Teachers are also human beings who need incentives and motivations. If we can have staff welfare like D&D in corporate companies, the teachers should entitle to these staff welfare as a form of motivation too. Unfortuately, schools are non-profit organisations and do not have such funds.
As parents of the schools, we should be happy that the Management Committee, PSG and Alumni Associations are organising these events for the teachers. If we have the means, let’s chip in happily. Why some schools are better and more popular and produce better results? One of the reasons is because there are contributions from stakeholders such as PSG, Alumni Association, parents and alumni. Better motivated teachers will produce the desired outcomes. -

:goodpost: i agree with u. Even though like some said those cannot accept can don't contribute but this is not the point. Imagine if all our schools were to practice/adopt this culture, what is our educational system trying to bring across to the world and to our kids? Greed or bribery ?I feel the memo is alittle contradictory..on the one hand, they mentioned that those who \"wish\" can donate..on the other hand, they are blatantly proposing the items they want to have. These are not most people's typical gifts to teachers.
I did a double take when I saw \"current digital gadgets or home appliance, tour packages, etc”. The issue is not whether it's \"voluntary\" but that the message may be misconstrued. I'm fine if these are items under any charity's wish list which I'm more than willing to donate, but for teacher day's gifts.....
I thought I read an article about Hong Kong's students lavishing such gifts on teachers and the practice was frowned upon, I hope schools here are not going to slowly adopt this? But I would say, I believe this is the exception rather than the norm. When my DS told me the teachers in sch are not allowed to accept gifts of more than $X , I had thought it's set by MOE and applied across the board.
ps: on reading the article carefully again, could it have meant gifts for lucky draws where only a few \"lucky\" teachers would get these? :scratchhead: If so, I can accept this arrangement and contribute if I wish to. It's perfectly alright in this case, sorry if I've overlooked that.
So isn't it good to be a teacher ? It comes with a good pay and expensive gifts ? -
it is still my opinion that it is the gossip tabloid media and the irresponsible anti-establishment website that in their bid to up their readership and eye-ball hit rates, they resort to twist the facts and sensationalise it out of nothing
just look at the title of this thread - it says "chs openly solicits teachers’ day presents from parents" – did the school do that ?
isn’t it designed to mislead and flame ? -
Mischief? Me?

no worry! not referring to you...anyone read the title of this thread and read the website would know you copied the title from there....no need to be too sensitive
once again, not referring to you
people should just go read the linked website before commenting and parroting what the website has twisted it to be, no less helped by TNP and wanbao, both are gossip papers to sensationalise matters out of context and out of proportion -
