MOE's salary adjustments for Teachers

I still do not understand why teachers are allowed to moonlight… but not other professions

The increment from what I see, is to attract more people into teaching line (MOE) & to retain existing teachers (who are thinking of leaving for higher pay).

Hey Lilac, pardon me but I don't really know the whole job market well. Which professions or companies in general strictly do not allow moon-lighting?

C-level holders in the corporate world are allowed to join other companies as part of board of directors, so that's openly holding other positions and its permissible. I'm not sure if government officials are allowed to hold such posts as well, or can take only take up board positions of other government bodies?

Do u know that 1hr tuition can fetch 150$ for moe teachers, so 6hrs 900$? 3600$ for 1 month. No wonder teacher quit to give tuition outside. Moe has no choice but to increase their pay to retain them.

MULTIPLY by number of tuition students... E.g. 10 students @ $36K/mth... :yikes:
MOE still lose lah...

Not to mention GEP tuition classes...

That's why we have Teachers' Day .... :evil:

sorry, I should have been more specific. I'm referring to civil service. Frankly I'm not too sure my idea about this is outdated, but according to what I know is civil servants, whether on full-time or part-time employment, cannot moonlight or start their own businesses at the expense of the service. They have to seek permission if they wish to take up additional job with an employer other than the civil service. That will ensure their outside activities do not result in a conflict of interest with their main duties or affect their performance.

Anybody knows if this is up-to-date? Maybe it's not,that's why we see alot of ads touting tuition classes by current teachers?

Maybe the government doesn't want to dampen the spirit of entrepreneurship =D I think they would love to spread Singapore's model of education all over the world.

Does private enrichment center tutors allowed to moonlight in other education businesses..?

if teacher moonlight (on top of stressful workloads as many teachers complain about), are they still able to commit or deliver their best to the students?

or focus on potential variable private income and bo chap fixed iron rice bowl style teacher salary?

Yep Lilac66, as far as possible every employer will want her employee to be fully devoted to only her organization! Yet in the name of supporting personal development, it may be cruel to mandate a blanket ban on all external involvements, whether they come with financial reward or otherwise. That said, employers will be wise to monitor the performance of all employees and filter out the really effective and loyal ones for promotion :grphug:
