PM Lee: What future do you want for Singapore?

Disagree.. All these is also a form of training. It is all rounded training.
I believe d logic behind d change is trainees n soldiers shd be spending their limited time during NSF undergoing training instead of wasting dat time on area cleaning, change parades, polishing boots n ironing uniforms (which they hv also done away with).
In times of war, expect someone to do the area cleaning for the soldier? or let base camp turn into rubbish dump?
or maybe the govt can mass import Filipino maids and assign 1 to each soldier..
They can help to carry full pack during fire movements while the soldiers focus on pulling the trigger of the rifle ONLY..... less all the burden.. -

If only they can encourage GIRO top-up (instead of imposing service charge), they don't even need so many GTMs! Less electricity and maintenance too..
Also at MRT stations, I see long queues at the counter that is manned , but not many go to the top-up machines. Why huh?
If the Govt wanna go towards cashless society.. they should hv incentives to encourage GIRO.. maybe waive the transaction fee for min $50 top ups etc.. -

dis is funny only coz ur response is out of context n borders on d ridiculous.
Did u serve in a combat unit? Heard of field discipline?
I hv nvr been to war, but hv u seen frontline soldiers at war spending inordinate amount of time on area cleaning instead of more important tasks?
Believe me, base camp SG cleanliness will still be largely maintained by civilians n some lainbei GD soldiers in time of conflict. -

You may not be complaining about FW but a whole lot of others are. They are saying FW contribute to the congestion in MRTs and buses. They don't like to see them loitering around their void decks. They are saying they do not like to be served by non-english speaking service staff. They are saying all the recent bus accidents are caused by foreign bus drivers. They are saying because of these foreign workers, local people who work that line are getting their wages suppressed.[/quote]Then these pple who doesn't appreciate FWs could learn to clear their own tables at food courts and hawker centers.
They are again not listening or selective listening..limlim:

We're slowly starting to see the impact after the reduction of FW. The number of cleaners (in ST today) has decreased and residents may have to do their own cleaning, which many are of course reluctant.
Also the conservancy and maintenance fees will soon increase.
Who's complaining about the FW? It's a fact they we need them..
It is the PMET FTs that pple are unhappy about.. they result in competition and wage suppression..
They should take in only real talents.. instead of mass import of cheap PMETs.
I believe you'll see more FTs on trains and buses than FWs.. who most probably stay near the workplace or have company transport provided.
Wage suppression cause by FW? even if the pay go up 50%, you may not be able to find ENOUGH locals to want to do the job.
Say, All the employers pay $1,500 or $2k for cleaners.. do you believe they can fill all the vacancies with locals?
Impossible right? -

Not because area cleaning is a skill that maybe useful, but the process of which taking care of their own surroundings, discipline etc.. and not waiting for someone to do it for them. -
dats why practice field discipline mah!

So, they are listening, just listening to the wrong group? -
oh… ok… Ya you’re right…

Perhaps companies have to import FT for reasons other than their pay.
I love fixing up IKEA furniture. Just follow the pictures, and you’re done. But nephew related how he had followed the pictures exactly, but the table he was putting together "looked funny" and wasn’t stable. It’ a little know secret that you don’t fully tighten all the screws (it should be just hand tight, but not forcefully tight) until you have the structure up and standing. Then fully tighten every nut and bolt.
My neighbour works in A*STAR. He related how a couple of young scholars were working on a chemical project. They did exactly what the book said to do. They did the safety test, which turned out ok. Then merrily proceeded to conduct the chemical test. Unfortunately, something leaked and soon, they could smell noxious, poisonous fumes. But they continued with the test, because the book said it was OK to continue once the safety test was OK. Fortunately, their supervisor came by before they were seriously harmed.
I have a good laugh when I hear such stories, but underneath, I find them very unsettling. And more so when I see more and more parents more concerned about stuffing their kids full of academic stuff, but not passing on their practical know how and common sense. -

Its true nowadays most kids are too preoccupied with studies, not much time left for exploring & DIY too!Perhaps companies have to import FT for reasons other than their pay.
