      Mychildren:

I have a good laugh when I hear such stories, but underneath, I find them very unsettling. And more so when I see more and more parents more concerned about stuffing their kids full of academic stuff, but not passing on their practical know how and common sense.

Its true nowadays most kids are too preoccupied with studies, not much time left for exploring & DIY too!

And the blooming tuition industry is making it worst..

I'm very disturbed by what I just read in Expat forum.

I'm a New Zealand citizen now. Anglo-Saxon. My daughter is Thai and she is a mix of my blood plus half Indian and aboriginal Thai from her mother. She speaks dual Thai and English (or as best as that as a 2 year old can manage). Ethnic we are a mix of Western and Asian, obviously. Mongrels. Is that what you wanted to know?

But when we move to Singapore we will be given citizenship. So I don't see what all pretext matters if you have the nationality.\"

No expat bashing please. Many of my friends and neighbour’s are not Singaporeans. Most are very nice.

Deng Xiao Peng said that if we open the windows, the flies will come in. If so, I’d like to do my best to shoo those files out again.

Perhaps companies have to import FT for reasons other than their pay.

I love fixing up IKEA furniture. Just follow the pictures, and you're done. But nephew related how he had followed the pictures exactly, but the table he was putting together \"looked funny\" and wasn't stable. It' a little know secret that you don't fully tighten all the screws (it should be just hand tight, but not forcefully tight) until you have the structure up and standing. Then fully tighten every nut and bolt.
My neighbour works in A*STAR. He related how a couple of young scholars were working on a chemical project. They did exactly what the book said to do. They did the safety test, which turned out ok. Then merrily proceeded to conduct the chemical test. Unfortunately, something leaked and soon, they could smell noxious, poisonous fumes. But they continued with the test, because the book said it was OK to continue once the safety test was OK. Fortunately, their supervisor came by before they were seriously harmed.

              Gud point.
One can't learn practical know-how fr books without being hands-on.

Don't totally agree dat FTs r better at practical know-how, definitely not all.
Hv personally seen FT? who try to couple pressure pipings without gasket; renovation contractor who dare not drill thro' tiled walls etc.

True. I can swap stories of how FT from some Asian countries are totally clueless when it comes to practical, real world know how. But I think it a problem with the educational emphasis in our East Asian countries. And I wouldn't like to see this trend continue here.

It's good to know how people from other countries perceive us, our short comings and the short comings of our governmental systems. Then decide how we want to position our strengths.

Interesting poll during the conversation with PM Lee... Where about 1/2 agrees that single women should have children.

Guess we all have to relook at our society...
                      - where man is not the only breadwinner
                      - where man is the SAHD
                      - where a family unit is not limited to a husband and wife with kid(s)
                      - where parenting is not limited to parents (e.g. Caregivers, maid, CCC, etc)
                      - where MOE government schools are not the only education route (those parents who can homeschool or afford a suite of enrichment programs, should be allowed to do so, with no strings attached by MOE)

Rather than imposing \"one size fits all\" policies...
                      :?
