Why screen kids in P1?

Why would the doctor suggest sending your son for an IQ test? In my books, IQ tests are only necessary if you suspect that your child has some form of learning disability or exhibits unusually high giftedness which you might need early intervention for. Otherwise, to test just to determine if your child has a high IQ is an exercise in vanity.

My boy has speech delay and is only now speaking more. Whatever it is, I don't see the need to do the IQ test now. He may fail in which case I think it will be unfair to him. Or he may pass and then why bother to do in the first place? Don't think it will turn out to be a gifted result. Certainly not testing for vanity purposes. I think my boy is just fine and I love him for who he is. I believe the very area of his weakness (speech) will be his greatest strength in time to come! :love:

If there is intent to help weaker kids, there is no need to test everyone. There is already a screening test at the start of the year - a literacy test to assess if the children are familiar with alphabet etc … These are already put to LSP. At mid-year of P1, which is when they administered this IQ test, teachers should already know whom the weaker ones are… they can pull only these weaker ones out for IQ test. The fact that they TEST every body suggests that they are not just looking for weak students.


Ravens is an IQ test. It can be used to finalise a diagnosis but should not be used as first step to diagnosis. Good tests cost money. Free tests are not accurate. To test everyone just to look for weak ones does not make sense. Teachers pull out those they observe to be bottom. Then confirm with IQ test. Makes more sense.

This gives kids who are sick on the day of the test and score badly the benefit of the doubt. If not, teacher look at your score… think you dumb… treat you like dumb. So you really become dumb. Self-fulfilling prophecy mah…

But if Teacher dunno your score but notice you are bottom of class and test you to confirm, then the diagnosis is more accurate because got teacher opinion AND test score. Same like breast cancer test. You notice a lump. Then you test it. If doctor diagnosis matches test diagnosis then you cut the breast. If you test everyone’s breasts, you waste money… and if test result is wrong then bye bye boobies.

I believe the 1st screening is done possibly to identify those who may not have any pre-school ed and really lacking in these areas. So when formal school begin, the school will have a better idea whether it's coz they did not have any foundation or they r just slow.

This iq done in July following ca1 and sa1 probably just to back up the evaluation based on ca and sa, perhaps trying to reduce the chances of the non-performance being coz by lousy teaching. Agree, it looks like some half baked scientific method.

And administering this test on everyone is perhaps their way of masquerading it so it will not hurt the self esteem of the kids ( or parents). The bitchiness can be quite intense in some branded school.
