MOE to scrap Banding for Secondary Schools

Then stop asking MOE to do any more policy changes to make life less stressful for the children if parents' mindset is not going to change in tandem. This is a very good example of stress not coming from MOE but from parents. It takes 2 to clap, if MOE has done its part, we gotta do ours.


MOE is doing this to make schools de-focus on inter-school competition but build their own unique niche so this will benefit the children in terms of academic pressure. The idea now is to choose schools based on the merits of its curriculum niche that it can offer or match to your child, not on its band ranking when stack against other schools. Can this be understood? New policies can come in but if old brains or behaviour stay on, nothing is gonna work. Then the complain cycle starts again...never ending story... :slapshead:

My prediction is that it will not work for the fact that which schools are the top is well established.
Unless, he removes COP for secondary school selection. All secondary schools should have a fair distribution of strong and weak PSLE students.
Or a more drastic move, ask the so called top secondary schools to take in the weakest PSLE students and turn them into stellar cum holistic O level students.

Removing banding is just like removing stars (6 stars, 5 stars) from hotel rating.

As long as we are a society that prizes achievement and success, it is hard to remove the competitiveness in schools and the difficulty in exam papers. If the PSLE is too easy, then many can go to the top schools and how are they going to differentiate who to take in. And even taking away the banding would not remove the perception in parents’ minds as to which schools are better…


I am for these changes but I do not see them really changing things. They are just like a dip in water, just saying it and while it is a step in the right direction, I really do not think it may change the way things are done in a substantial way. Sigh…

Banding = performance of the school.

Although related, but not quite the same.

I doubt that these changes will make a dent in Singapore education system and its already firmly developed kiasuism.

It doesn't really matter as long as some parents see the +ve in this changes.

MOE can change the system n encourage non-academics achievements...

But can the mindsets of educators and parents be changed to embrace these non-academics areas?
I think it will take a few generations...

Well it seems to me that most top-dollar earning jobs available on the market require great qualifications, unless we're talking about the salespeoples' jobs, like real estate agents. Otherwise entrepreneurship could earn quite a bit, but there are only so many customers to serve in Singapore and the chances of global success are much slimmer than getting a well paying job with a good degree. Could someone list out some top-dollar jobs that do not require great academic results? (This is of course discounting general labels like \"top chef\", \"top sportsman\" etc. The top people in every profession are bound to earn more. I'm talking about the average earnings of the professions.)

I think people think very short term. Everyone panics when a child fails a difficult exam even though we know that in the long term, that one failure means little for future success. The way I see it is that parents kiasuism will reduce purely because of the Domino Effect.


Taking banding does not affect parents directly. Frankly, I didn’t even analyze banding to choose schools but I did analyze COP… and the access to the CCA my DS loves. Then I picked one school for every 10 tranches all the way down to 220. Banding and parents are about as closely related as me and my 2nd cousin in law… BUT related we still are.

Domino 1: Banding falls.

Domino 2: Cut throat competition between schools fall.

Domino 3: Principals stop being kiasu and they stop pressing on teachers to deliver stellar GRADES.

Domino 4: Teachers stop being kiasu and so they stop flogging our kids with failure after failure.

Domino 5: Parents see no red marks on report card… they dun worry so much. They dun panic and start scurrying around for tutors. There are OF COURSE parents who will STILL send for tuition just in case. But there are many parents like me too who didn’t REALLY wake up until DS failed in P5 and then I REALLY started to be kiasu. And since I am a perfectionist. I kiasu is really very kiasu. Perfectly kiasu.

My thoughts. Don’t flame me.
