Why screen kids in P1?

Chenonceau:
Good IQ test are expensive. I don't think a system that slots people into Normal and Express and Gifted really cares enough to masquerade. A lot of money is required to test everyone. I'm not sure our MOE is the sort to throw money at matters of self-esteem.
I believe the 1st screening is done possibly to identify those who may not have any pre-school ed and really lacking in these areas. So when formal school begin, the school will have a better idea whether it's coz they did not have any foundation or they r just slow.Nebbermind:
If there is intent to help weaker kids, there is no need to test everyone. There is already a screening test at the start of the year - a literacy test to assess if the children are familiar with alphabet etc ... These are already put to LSP. At mid-year of P1, which is when they administered this IQ test, teachers should already know whom the weaker ones are... they can pull only these weaker ones out for IQ test. The fact that they TEST every body suggests that they are not just looking for weak students.
Ravens is an IQ test. It can be used to finalise a diagnosis but should not be used as first step to diagnosis. Good tests cost money. Free tests are not accurate. To test everyone just to look for weak ones does not make sense. Teachers pull out those they observe to be bottom. Then confirm with IQ test. Makes more sense.
This gives kids who are sick on the day of the test and score badly the benefit of the doubt. If not, teacher look at your score... think you dumb... treat you like dumb. So you really become dumb. Self-fulfilling prophecy mah...
But if Teacher dunno your score but notice you are bottom of class and test you to confirm, them the diagnosis is more accurate because got teacher opinion AND test score. Same like breast cancer test. You notice a lump. Then you test it. If doctor diagnosis matches test diagnosis then you cut the breast. If you test everyone's breasts, you waste money... and if test result is wrong then bye bye boobies.
This iq done in July following ca1 and sa1 probably just to back up the evaluation based on ca and sa, perhaps trying to reduce the chances of the non-performance being coz by lousy teaching. Agree, it looks like some half baked scientific method.
And administering this test on everyone is perhaps their way of masquerading it so it will not hurt the self esteem of the kids ( or parents). The bitchiness can be quite intense in some branded school.
If it is a free test, then it is of EVEN greater concern. Funny that you wanna make such positive speculation for the system at every turn. ... I really doubt the school system cares about student bitchiness to waste resources by testing everyone. Gee... it is sometimes hard to get schools to intervene in the case of bullying.
Besides, if you dun test everyone, you can afford to alert parents... explain... and be very discreet so other kids dunno. I do confidential tests and interviews on staff. I am not allowed to tell... HR holds it confidential... There are ways to keep tests secret from people who have NO BUSINESS knowing. Therefore, the test is itself not the bitching issue. Bitching ALREADY starts when others know you are in LSP. There is no way to hide one's LSP, Normal stream, Express stream and Gifted stream status from other kids.
There is a whole lotta bitching going on in our schools anyway. I spoke to an overseas scholar some years ago... I mentioned the word GEP and saw his eyes glaze over. He was a bright kid (now a man) from RI. Played rugby... perfect score at A levels. But he unmistakably disliked GEPpers. In a sense, I sympathize with the GEP. The burden of social prejudice must be hard to bear. For the parents, the pride and the good teaching in GEP may make things quite pleasant... but gifted children carry the burden through life. Some are afraid to tell others they're gifted.
In all, my view is that your speculation does not seem plausible. If they test all, they are not just looking for weak.
I agree that this test is not truly to look for the weak. When the child has been in school for over 6mths, there is no need for such tests to point out the weak. From the child's work and his results from the many mini tests, the teacher will be able to tell if the child needs help. This 1 single test is not a good gauge.
I am in fact of the opinion, after checking out the test and doing it myself, that it is not effective in identifying at risk children but it may work better at identifying brilliant kids. Children may not score well due to many reasons, not familiar with answer formats, not feeling well, not interested, etc. In fact, I got bored after going through a few pages and tikam the rest. But for those who score well, can only attribute mainly to the child's capability and maybe an intsy winsy bit of luck. -

Not SCREENING lah ... hothousing. Sperm hothousing. It's a newly patented technique for increasing the IQ of human offspring. Will be on the market soon. Parents can line up from here to Batam. -

Why would hothousing sperm lead to fewer complaints? :scratchhead:
There'll be more complains then. With sperms going for GEP prep course.GLORYmum:

Yah loh... if they continue to test everyone... GEP prep will start with sperm.

Glad she brought so much laughter to you today through her school experiences...
Seriously if she did not poo, she might not have told me about this at all as this did not seem important to her.
