Yes, I agree with you about the 'school' spirit' part - very true for missions schools. For schools like MGS & SCGS - the emphasis is not solely on Academics, and they wish to retain as many primary MGS/SCGS girls who have spent 6 years in the school. From what I know for MGS, about 25-30% don't make the affiliated cut-off so they have to leave. Previously, they would try to absorb back all the girls from the primary school. The school's ethos is to give the girls a well rounded education and they have lots of emphasis on their CCA - the diferent types of CCA for MGS from P1 is amazing and the hardest part is deciding what to take up ...there are so many options !
I believe it is about the \"school spirit\" and how they wish to retain this in their secondary school. Many affiliated schools have very strong school spirit from P1 and the students are very proud to be in that school.
School culture plays a great part in moulding a youth. MGS girls speak very well. -
mummyjoyce:
The reason is to keep their cultures - so you have a big team of Old Boys or Girls.
If this is the primary reason for being, then the respective school's ethos should include:\" We will never abandon the children in our schools\". What kind of school spirit is that when a school discard the 25 - 30% who don't make the affilated COA cutoff at a time when these children need it most! -

My guess is that since there are several Independent, Autonomous and DSA schools, their 'merit', even if close, may not e TOTALLY aligned to MOE's 'merit'. So they prob have the final say in who they are going to be admitted, especially those at the tailend of their list.VitoRelax:
Exactly. So why they need 20 days to inform us ?
So this period may be for them to sort out those who are granted the special privilege of playing musical chair among the top schools.
Human intervention...human intervention.
A computer program is only as smart as the person who designs it. It's tough to design every possible scenario into the algorithm:!: -
Way2GO:
Yeah! Surely the program will not have this parameter \"$30k donation\"... :!:

Me too ...wondering why the magical no of days : 20?
VitoRelax:
All students are required to submit application by 2nd Dec.
Results of posting only out on 22 Dec.
Anyone knows why MOE needs 20 days ? Their software should be able to chune out the results based on the algorithm at the touch of a button !! -

The mean is affected by the outlier usually but again it really depends on MOE's 'actual' std cal.
James Ang:
Previous years the lowest is always around 87, but this year the lowest is 45, so I can only assume that there are students who gets 46, 48 53, 67, 82 etc. If it is just an outlier then it should be knock off to prevent a misunderstanding. I agree the mean and std deviation can be a useful guide to help parents in this kind of \"unusual\" situation.VitoRelax:
Of course, your calculation is based on assumption of simple averages.
We can have a clearer picture if MOE release the mean & standard deviation of all subjects for every year.
Any idea why MOE does not want to release this info ?
Any idea why should simple info like mean & standard deviation be confidential ? -

What I meant was: how to input a parameter \"30K donation\" when the system has to be seen as fair and transparentWay2GO:
