There is a book called \"From Model to Algebra\" by Dr Yeap Ban Har, published by Shinglee. I got it from Popular. Although it's intended to help bridge P6 students to Secondary, I think the first few chapters in the book are great way to help bridge P4/5 students to algebra.
is this the book ?
how you find it ?

Yes that's the book. The book is written in a way that will help a child to understand algebra quite easily, each chapter builds on previous chapter. It's like a mini textbook. First Dr Yeap teaches concept st start of each chapter then you do simple practice exercises. He begins by getting students to translate from model to algebraic equation, then in second half of book he moves into algebraic equations.beanbear:

If u go popular it's quite an obscure book to find. Think u must go to Maths guide books section. -
The sales of this book is going to shoot up! Lol!
Not expensive surprisingly. -

Actually I was surprised to find the book when I was browsing the shelves. It had been on my mind to find something that will help me to teach my primary school child and for a child to self-learn algebra easily. It's definitely not easy to find such a book. Shinglee is a little known publisher but I recognized Dr Yeap as a well-known Maths curriculum specialist. Sometimes, as parents we really are at a loss what kind of books to get and what to look for that will pitch appropriately for our children's ability. The sales of this book is going to shoot up! Lol!

Beanbear, thanks for sharing. It really seem to be a great book for the kids' transition from model to algebra. The sale of this book is really going to boom....haha.

Hi!
I noted that there are 2 Maths assessment books with the same title "Step-by-Step" - one by CASCO and one by EPH ==> which is the one that is more recommended?
I am also q keen to try out Andrew Er Maths assessment books but realised that there are several titles under his belt… any parents have tried any of them and find them good?
Thanks!:) -
Hi ilovechubby,
My very limited knowledge based on P1 assessment books…between the 2 step-by-step books, the EPH one would be more for building foundation and concepts, while the CASCO one has some very challenging questions for each topic. Andrew Er has many different assessment books with different focus, depending on whether you want to have more practice on the routine arithmetic type of questions or more on problem sum solving. For problem sum, I find his Challenging problem sums book quite interesting and also quite do-able, unlike some of the challenging questions in CASCO books which I get stumped as well….especially those magic squares or IQ type of questions (or maybe you can call them heuristics questions)…for Andrew Er books, although the problem sums can be quite challenging, at least still solvable with some logical thinking. I think Andrew Er also has a book titled ‘Use of Heuristics in Problem Solving’ which also explain the basic techniques of Heuristics, but only has quite basic examples and questions. -
Hi! I’m new here…just wondering what are some of the best Math assessment books around now?

Which area do you want to focus? Word problems (Section C)? Or mixture of Section A, B and C questions? I find Andrew Er's Challenging Maths is good if you are looking for Section C.
