MP echoes calls for PSLE to be scrapped

beanbear:
To understand, one needs to look at what is 精英政治:
So what I would ask is for MOE to review what's really the purpose of PSLE? Is it healthy to have the best of the best students for the Top 10 schools to be bundled up together? Is it not elitist to have schools where there are no \"slower\" students? Why? Why must top students only be among themselves? How do we teach these students to have compassion for \"slower\" people? How else do they learn to be more understanding of people who are less academic than they are, who have different abilities & intelligences? Must we already have such segregation at Secondary level? That's what the PSLE is supporting. That's what I have issues with.

Same here. I hate the idea of extreme changes. I am not in favour of DSA either.England has taken away psle right? And recent report shows tt the results of their students drop right ... So why must we follow their footsteps?..
Sorry to say I don't like 'bold changes '. As what some of the parents here have mentioned, the ministry should think of steps to improve from current systems and not to scrape it which might end up making us move backward ..Don't let any of our children be scape goats ..
PSLE should continue. Some schools attempt to make kids feel that 'it is end of the world' if they don't achieve certain COP. Are these schools trying to hit above average KPIs ??? Naturally some parents (and MPs) will want to scrape PSLE with such pressure imposed on the kids.
All our kids are working very very hard this year. They do not need more unncessary pressure before they assemble in front of IMH. -

Oh yes .. If we think that our kids have very little chance for DSA then we can just forget about it and get our kids to study hard for psle unless we want our kid to experience the DSA process be it successful or not..

Seriously I think moe shd look into and control the amt of stress the pri school is giving to the kids in preparing them for psle .. I believe some schools are doing fine while some are putting too much stress .. -
Janet, You’ve got mail.

Actually not every child or his parents want to aim for top sec schools. We just want a good sec school. However, not knowing which sec school the child will be posted to or end up, pushes all the wrong buttons.
If there are more affiliated secondary schools, it takes some steam off. Eg MGS, they don’t produce top students even though all cards are in their favor. On the whole, their students still do very well and have a more rounded education.
The main stress of PSLE for many of us is secondary school placement. -
My goodness, saw the word IMH here.
To all, take it easy, there are more to come in the future.
Just let u & your child do their best for now but not to the extreme of getting :siao: .
I'll remind myself when its my turn. -
Janet... :snuggles: it may be good to calm down a little eh? Changes are being wrought. No sense that we continue nipping at the heels of MOE? TODAY, every school is NOT a good school. I agree and have been saying this (and getting flamed for it) very loudly.
However, there is a DECLARED INTENT to make every school a good school.
Not @ Janet
I can understand parents who are still worried about GEP, DSA and IP and all that because gee... when NOT every school is a good school, the GEP, DSA and IP business DOES cause stress. I am the last person to diss people for feeling the stress caused by GEP, DSA and IP BECAUSE in the past, lousy schools get LESS money. If it were me, I die-of-stress also won't want my kid to get into a lousy school. Now, with the banding eliminated, schools will be resourced according to NEED. Does that make things better?
EVENTUALLY... IF the MOE succeeds in making every school a good school, my guess is that GEP, DSA and IP will no longer have any meaning... naturally... without any attempt to eliminate them. Who would put in so much effort to DSA (and believe me, it is a LOTTA effort and right now, only the REALLY kiasu people who've been helping their kids perform from P1 to P6, do it... I myself could not be bothered) if all schools were good?
But right now... we're not there yet. So I understand why parents still feel stressed about DSA and IP and all that. I do. But I am too apathetic to give MOE feedback about DSA and IP because it's too late for my son anyway.... and by the time the grand children come, hopefully Every School Will Be A Good School. -

How true! I totally agree with the above. In fact, I am very happy that MOE is actively listening to the feedbacks from parents, schools and taking actions about it. It is a different MOE now than the past machinery...

Regarding PSLE scrapping, it needs further study although personally I am not at all for it. Not that I am a sucker (oops, excuse the language) for exams but it's because I feel the real problem is not with PSLE but other things such as T-score and over-testing. T-score compares the students against each other, hence adding to all the stress (KS parents feel their kids must be ahead of bell-curve etc) and really, do we need all that? If PSLE is to test how well the student has mastered the subject matter, then it should not matter what the other students fare but how each fare against the benchmark for that subject. No? Maybe, we can replace the current scoring with a raw score grading e.g GPA grading. THat way, we can still know how well the child/student knows/understand the subject. Based on this score, parents can choose the best schools for the children. Like what Mawar mentioned, no every parent wants to send their kids to the best school academically but I am sure ALL parents want to send their kids to the school that is best suited for their kids.
Just my teeny weeny half a cent worth... -
Melodies:
Why worries? No banding now, every school is a good school now! why need to use psle for sec school placement? Any school would do since they r equally good! why need to use plse to group all the bright students into school 1, 2.. but group those students with poor results to school x,y,z...to make them somewhat different from each other, then how to be every school is. A good le?
Yeh, if MOE really wants to \"every school to be a good school\". there is no purpose for PSLE really! :please: -
ponyo:
:goodpost: Before banding was eliminated, I didn't want DS in the best secondary school BUT I did want him in a good school... because I knew that these schools get a lot more resources and can do more for their kids. Some schools are so poor they have ONLY ONE photocopier for 60 teachers to share. No wonder teachers don't print notes and only teach from textbooks.

Like it or not, schools with more money can help the children better. Now that schools will be resourced by NEED, I hope things will improve.
