:faint: so, the MOE is playing the word game? All school are good but not equal? Good in its own way? still can't change the core problem. Are they trying to get the imposing slogan but nothing change for the core system? 换汤不换药 :yikes:

concern2:
There had been debates on GEP in parliament prior to this. Seems like there is no intention to scrape it. Now PSLE.
To understand, one needs to look at what is 精英政治:beanbear:
So what I would ask is for MOE to review what's really the purpose of PSLE? Is it healthy to have the best of the best students for the Top 10 schools to be bundled up together? Is it not elitist to have schools where there are no \"slower\" students? Why? Why must top students only be among themselves? How do we teach these students to have compassion for \"slower\" people? How else do they learn to be more understanding of people who are less academic than they are, who have different abilities & intelligences? Must we already have such segregation at Secondary level? That's what the PSLE is supporting. That's what I have issues with.

At the moment, the kids are already being screened at P4 level, not PSLE. Essentially, if GEP is able to sift out that 1%, PSLE isn't really that relevant anymore. So it will be that 1% against the 99%. Flourish or flop, there is no guarantee. Just like PSLE doesn't guarantee a bright future. The $$ poured into boosting grades for PSLE channeled into giving the children a more holistic education may be more worthwhile. Money have to come from somewhere, and good teachers do not come from nowhere. Many are giving private tuitions now. How to improve schools like that? FT ah?! -
phankao:
It's possible to do Sec without tuition, I'd think. I do leave my kids without as they start. My eldest only had tuition for 1yr for her Math in sec 3, and also for her chinese that year. She managed to cope on her own after that *boost*. My older boy may need tuition but no time so he tries hard to cope on his own and consults his teachers when he needs ;( Our current sec 1, *sigh*. Yeah, in the end needed Math tuition too which he started 2nd half of the year. Interestingly enough, he says he understands when his tutor explans, but not when his teachers do. Really *sigh*, bc then what are our teachers doing in school lessons? Our elder daughter also only improved after getting help from tutor - from F to A in a few months after getting tuition - again, how come the school teachers don't teach so that the child can get the A from the start? How come they are not teaching in a way the child understands and excels? Last time in secondary, it was my class math teacher who was so good at teaching in upper secondary that I went from F to A in Sec 3. How come now we have to use tutors... tutors \"BETTER\" than school teachers these days? Aiyoh.
Same here, I also get DD (Sec One) this year a Math tutor as the Math is getting tougher after term 1. DD only attended Math workshop during P5/P6 but tution was not needed during that time.
As for other subjects, at this moment the external help is still not required. -

It is a holistic approach, and the intention is good. Just the executive isn't that easy. Here's a start - support for parents:

If you have a few children, are they all equal?
Do you let them do everything equally even if they demonstrate different strengths? :scratchhead:
The core problem is in the mindset here....it sounds like unless we reach communism, we will never end this perceived inequality talk of schools.
And I don't think that MOE is trying to fool people with slogans, it is however trying to educate that they can only do things within their control, i.e. STOP the schools from competing with one another. I seriously think MOE has done the best thing ever as a first step to show that they are seriously trying to alleviate the pressure that children are facing as they are the ones getting majorly hit, not so much pandering to the parents whom they have no control and some are still lost. And they will continue to pressure the kids academically even if the school does not.... The Paper Chase Dream will always be the motivation.
I want to applaud MOE.

This I agree. Even if PSLE is really scrapped, the popular schools will remain popular, I am sure. The history, the alumnus, the track records. And birds of the same feathers will tend to flock together
