I'm in a dilemma. I discouraged DS3 from taking HCL when he was in P5 and was happy that he gave up in P6. Now, he is eligible to do HCL in secondary school. 😒 He managed to get that A through great efforts by his Chinese teacher and lots of pushing from me. He spent more than 80% of his time doing Chinese every day. Can anybody pls enlighten me what is the syllabus like for HCL in secondary school and how tough it is? :stupid: πŸ˜“

You can only use the bonus points from HMT if going to SAP school - but well, since all SAP schools are chinese, we should be talking about HCL here.

May I know how many bonus points for HCL if going to SAP school? What are the grades for HCL (merit or distinction and etc.... like pass/fail?)? Is the bonus point added to the T-score directly? If going to non-SAP (like RGS), will the bonus points apply?

My son similar to yours. Spent a disapproportionate amt of time on CL. For such a child, I will only feel comfortable with him taking HCL if he's in an IP programme. At least then when he does HCL O-levels, he only needs to concentrate on that 1 subject for o-levels instead of a whole range of 8 or 9 subjects at 1 time.

            Add to T-score:
            +1 if pass
            +2 if merit
            +3 if distinction.

            Non-sap cannot use bonus points.

That's right. Like \" jitancat\", my son also did not take HCL and did not get A*. Only got A for CL. But received the letter to do HMT for Sec.

So for those who get A, must be within Top 10% of cohort.
My girl had A for Chinese, Merit for HMT but the letter did not state she is eligible for HMT in sec sch. Instead 3rd lang option of Malay & bahasa Indo is given. I asked MOE why. She said can apply in sec sch during registration, this is not classified under appeal.

I asked 3rd choice sch and the Malay teacher said must go through a compo test (after asking if my girl got A* for Chinese and what grade she got for Eng, btw she got A for Eng). Don't know whether to trust her or not.

My sincerest apology for making a mess of the requirements to do HCL at Sec.

Nevertheless, the important fact that I was trying to put across is that taking HCL at Sec and passing it will save the agony of having to do Chinese at JC.

                Thanks for all the clarifications.
                It's okay πŸ™‚

Maybe it's not the top 10% of the cohort eligible for the HMTL, maybe it's Top 9% or Top 8%.

I think only the TOP 10% of the cohort are eligible for French, Japanese and German. πŸ™‚

Hmmm.. don't know, not sure. IN any case, we didn't receive the type of letter that <caroline3sg> says her daughter got. My son who got A for CL/EL(no HCL), had the HMT/3rd lang(all those foreign languages) letter.

You are eligible for HMT if:
                      a) you are ranked top 10% of cohort; or
                      b) ranked top 11-30% AND have scored either A* in MTL or at least Merit in HMTL.

Perhaps your dd is not within top 30% of cohort.

But I meet the merit in HMT.

Learning HCL is easier than 3rd lang in Malay or bahasa arab or indo.

I just called MOE. She took down my details & ask officer to look into it.
