I don't think it's too far into the future to ask ourselves these questions. Before long, our kids will be competing with global sources of manpower. I would not like to see our local grads fail in their ambitions because we parents have been too narrow in our definition of what skills sets to equips our children with now.

i think all these exams no matter whether in pri, sec or future in work, are just like projects and tasks given to accomplish.. a student who studies well is more likely to accomplish a given task easier, and more competent.. of cos i'm not saying that all top students will definitely be successful in their career, but they are more capable in their sense..

tat of cos does not apply to any disabiliies... students with learning disabilities may not learn tat fast, but who knows if they have other talents?? they could be gifted in drawing or designing, or even have a gd biz mindset...??

still, with or w/o talents, gd or poor results, it is the process of learning... even inherit huge wealth in future, u still need to manage... so all the learning part comes to place... so isnt that what we look for in education??

to educate is not only about studying... is about bits and pieces of everything..

For some of us, we are already competing on a global platform and it can be cut-throat. This means that not only must we be technically strong, we also need to be culturally sensitive as well as being able to learn, unlearn and re-learn very quickly. I try to teach my DC such skills (eg personal effectiveness, effective communication, presentation, how to xxxxxx) because I believe they will be relevant in the corporate world. Technical knowledge is fixed and every organisation will likely be doing the same in more or less similar way. Am also trying to bring my DC up as global citizens apart from ensuring academic competence.

Just wondering. If MOE manages to incorporate other aspects to evaluate a student, such as character development, community services, sports, etc…other than academic results, will other countries recognise such evaluations if a child goes overseas to study?

I would like to think so.
I approached those edu consultants during overseas edu fair and quite a number of them did mention besides academic results, they would also look into the CCA, character, sports/arts achievements etc to have a fair evaluation.

face to face interview, some written tests like those IQ ones that may offer a glimpse into their inner feelings or maybe an essay on yourself

Depends on what you course you are applying for. Achievements in CCAs should be related to course of study - just like in CV, you need to state 'relevant experience'.
