        Hi,

        I got a question to ask:

        I always thought that when you see the word ‘place’ ie. The digit 8 is in the _________ place, it means answers like ‘thousands’, ‘hundreds’ etc are required; and when they ask for ‘value’ ie. What is the value of ‘8’, it means it wants answers like ‘8000’.

        How about ‘place value’? ‘Thousands’ or ‘8000’?

          You thought right in the first place. Pardon the pun. :lol: Take for example a given set of numbers - 18452. For place value, it means how much the digit 8 represents which in this case 8000 or 8 thousands. Another way this question is asked is \"What does the digit '8' stands for?\"

              Hi please help.

              Daisy had twice as many pencils as Sulin at first. Then Rose gave 8 pencils to Sulin. After that, Rose had three times as many pencils as Sulin. If Daisy, Sulin and Rose had 134 pencils altogether, how many more pencils than Daisy did Rose have at first?

              Thanks!!!

                Before
                D : S = 2U : 1U

                After
                R : S = 3V : 1V

                Since the After of 'Sulin' is 8 more than Before, 1V = 1U + 8

                So 3V = 1U+8+1U+8+1U+8 = 3U + 24 [Rose 'After']

                The Total pencils is :
                D (after is same as before) + R (after) + S (after)
                = (2U) + (3U+24) + (1U+8 )
                = 6U + 32

                Since total is 134, therefore :
                6U + 32 = 134
                6U = 102
                1U = 17

                Before of D is 2U = 34
                After of Rose is (3U+24) = 3x17 + 24 = 75
                Before of Rose = 75 + 8 = 83

                Difference between Daisy and Rose = 83 - 34 = 49

                    Errrr. atutor,

                    When I work backwards, the answer is not right?

                    If Daisy is 17, Suling will have 8.5 pencil??
                    And when I add up everything, it doesn’t come up to 134.

                      Hi ks2me,
                      Thanks for your answer. It is correct, but I don't understand why for SL with U + 8, each of the Unit in R is also U + 8?

                      8 is taken out only once from R, so how come U + 8 appears 3 times for R?
                      Shouldn't it be only once?

                      Please enlighten. Thank you.

                        U is the first basic unit of what Daisy has.

                        So with reference to Daisy, Sulin has U+8 when Rose gives 8 to Sulin. (exactly following the statement given)

                        Then it says, Rose has 3 times as many as Sulin. (So you don't worry about Rose's 8 given away but look at Rose with reference to Sulin as 3 times)

                        So if SuLin is (U+8 ), then Rose will be 3 times of that, hence U+8 is shown on the model diagram 3 times.

                        If you want to see with reference to Rose, it should be -8, not +8 and then the assumption of U will be different, it will not be Daisy's unit.
