        Mummies

Thanks for all the feedback about your kids having friends.
I guess the crux of the issue here is ‘delay’, they will eventually be able to establish friendship but are later than their peers due to ASD. Well…later is better than never right?

My son also plays only chasing games with his classmates but can’t initiate other play or conversation. And when other kids talk to him, he ignores them.

He knows the names of some of his classmates although not all. And his teacher told me that he prefer to mix with boys than girls. lol! And because of this, I am contemplating to send him to a boy’s school but there are non around my area.

Gals are more nurturing leh. My boy got a lot of gals looking after him. Some of the boys teased him for stuttering and made fun of him...

Yah I thought so too. But don’t know why he prefers to mix with boys.

Anyone engage a shadow teacher before? I’m thinking of getting one to follow My son to school & prompt him to initiate contact with his friends.

No I didn't although I am tempted. But a shadow teacher is expensive.

When did your kid start to socialise with other children? My boy can socialise with adults but not children.

Do your kids have friends in school? or still a loner?
My boy is now in K2. Similarly to a few of the kids here, other kids tend to want to make friends with him since N1, but he seemed aloof. We still thought that he was acting cool! LOL! It is only in the middle of K1 that he started talking about having friends in school, and even had a girlfriend (ok, they broke off :p). Now, the teacher still says that he still prefers to be alone at times.

I wanted to and enquired...but we can't afford. It's about $40 per hour or about $5K per month!!!

If the shadow teacher is just to prompt him to initiate contact, IMO there's no need for that. Some pp just are aloof. If he doesn't want to make friends now, let him be. How many of us still have friends from kindy anyway? If the shadow teacher is to do more than that like getting him to concentrate on his tasks, keep up the sch work etc, then I think it's more appropriate.

I think not having friends is better than having bad friends.
